Preliminary List of Affirmative Cases by Lab
Berger/Strange
1. Consent - Many with mental health problems cannot understand what is
involved with being a subject in drug testing. The absence of informed choice
means they are used as a means and the process threatens them and society. Plan
provides third party advice.
2. Federal Employees - Plan sets up Medical Savings Accounts for MHC. This
model leads to private use/coverage. The benefits are primarily economic.
3. Methadone Maintenance - Heroin addiction leads to HIV/AIDS, crime (may
claim), and stigma. Plan reschedules methadone and expands clinics.
4. Prison Rape Counseling - Lack of counseling means mental health problems and
cycle of rape. Plan is currently US Supreme Court.
5. Psychotropic Drugs - Over prescription means social control, ruined lives,
discrimination v black women, open door to genocide, violence in schools. Plan
extends regulations created in the Nursing Home Reform Act to regulate and stop
over use.
6. Rape Shield Laws - Plan will probably be Supreme Court; raises the standard
for defendant access to rape counseling records. Access now discourages
reporting and counseling.
Ceren/Cheshier
1. Alabama v Garrett - Overturn Alabama v Garrett, which would enable state
workers to hold their state employers accountable for mental health care and to
the ADA.
2. Drug Research - Have the USFG invest more (in the 500 M range) in
pharmaceutical drug research.
3. Eating Disorders - Train general family practitioners to counsel families
and individual patients about eating disorders from a more broad cultural
perspective.
4. GLBT Youth - Train school teachers/counselors to better provide support for
gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender youth.
5. J.R. v. Parham - Overturn J.R. v. Parham to provide kids with expanded due
process in civil commitment proceedings.
6. Mentally Ill Homeless/Veterans -- Further integrate public health services
for the mentally ill homeless, with special attention to veterans.
7. Parity - Implement national insurance parity -- big economic advantages.
8. Possible aff to lift the abortion gag rule.
Cunningham/Davis
1. AIDS - Increase public health services for mental health care ; solves for
risky behavior and HIV mutations.
2. Community Based Health Care - Big Stick Advantages: homelessness, suicide,
stigma, institutionalization bad.
3. Federal Employee Medical Savings Accounts - Advantage - Modeled U.S.
economic growth good.
4. Military - The DOD will increase public health services for mental health
care for rapists and rape victims in the military. Advantage - either - rape or
readiness/hegemony.
Garen/Russell
1. Medical Savings Accounts for employees of the Federal Government.
Advantages: depression, economy
2. Increased mental health care for veterans. Advantages: improve mental
health care, remember Vietnam
3. Mental health care for people with HIV/AIDS. Advantages: prolong life,
reduce spread through risky behavior
(IV drugs, etc.), and prevent AIDS mutations (by increasing the percentage of
people with HIV/AIDS that take their medications consistently)
4. Promote non-drug treatments for ADD and ADHD. Advantage: Ritalin serves
pharmocratic interests (Szasz,
etc.).
Horowitz/McIntosh
1. Sexual Orientation Counseling. Requires secondary and post secondary
schools to provide counseling for S.O. Advantages: harassment and societal
heterosexism.
2. Abortion. Restore the federal funding for abortions when the mother's
mental health is in danger. Advantages: patriarchy, feminization of poverty,
and overpopulation (modeling).
3. Jaffee. Extend confidentiality provisions to military health care.
Advantages: readiness, suicide, and alienation of gays in the military.
4. Native American Tribal Healers. Adds tribal healers to IHS (Indian Health
Service) coverage. Advantages: colonialism, historical trauma (Indians relive
seven generations of pain), and indigenous communities.
5. Marriage Fraud. Provides diagnostic screening counseling , education, and
awareness for conditional residents who wish to leave their marriage because of
spousal abuse. Advantages: spousal abuse and intersectionality.
6. Fund research for veterans mental health care. INCOMPLETE - may not be
run...without more work students will be strongly encouraged not to run it.
Advantages: homelessness, suicide & readiness.

1. ADA: Require states to provide mental health care to employees under ADA --
stigma/discrimination/eugenics advantage.
2. Mental Health Courts: Mental health treatment/suicide/abuse/dehumanization
advantages.

Secularism--Psychology ignores the spiritual and attempts to impose a secular
viewpoint that is based in an assumption that reason and faith/the secular and
the spiritual are binary opposites. The neg calls into question this
assumption that secularism and faith are distinct means of knowing through
identifying the particular ways in which the aff employs secular
representations of the self through psychology/psychiatry's excessive
disciplinary reliance on secular approaches.
