Subject: East Grand Rapids 2000 Invitation
We are attempting to expand our draw this coming year at our tournamente. We
are trying to reach programs that have never attended before. Towards that, we
have received a number of requests about information for our tournamente. Hard
Copy invitations will be sent out at the beginning of next year, and a full
invitation will be posted to the Listserv. If you are interested in receiving
an invitation prior to this, please respond to this post.
The Selling Points:
DATES: EGR Pioneer Classic Debate Tournamente October 27th - 29th, 2000
THE TOURNAMENTE:We have drawn 80-90 teams in Varsity and 60-70 teams in Novice,
representing 30+ schools from all over the Midwest and East. We expect to draw
similar or better numbers in 2000. Please register formally, as we often fill
up and have to turn away "informal" registrations.
The Varsity Division will consist of six preliminary debates. Due to
Standardized Testing, we will be starting on Saturday at 12:00 Noon
(tentatively) . We hope to be able to offer interested students the opportunity
to take the SAT at EGR, if that will help you attend our tournamente. The
Novice Division will be TWO PERSON, SWITCH SIDES. This is a change from
previous years. There will be five preliminary rounds. We will attempt to clear
to Octofinals, given sufficient numbers.
The Pioneer Classic this year was a Tournamente of Champions Qualifier, at the
Semifinals Level. We expect similar or better qualifying levels next year.
East Grand Rapids is committed to expanding opportunity through debate. Towards
that end, we have minimized trophies at our tournamente. In lieu of trophies, a
donation will be made in the debaters^Ò names to help finance scholarships for
Urban Debate League students who attend summer institutes. We are excited about
this opportunity to give back to our activity and broaden our community.
FEES: Fees for the tournamente are $55 per two person Varsity team, $45 per two
person Novice Team. Boxed Dinners on Friday are included in the registration
fee. A limited number of hired judges will be available for $125 each. Please
contact us early if you need hired judges. Entries, judges and fees will be
frozen on Wednesday, October 25th at 6PM.
LODGING:
The Grand Rapids Hilton Inn, 4747 28th Street SE, once again will be the
official tournamente hotel, providing rooms at a special rate of $72 for one to
four persons. The cutoff date for the room block is October 8th. For
reservations call (616) 957-0100 and ask for Judith Young, Head of Group Sales.
