[ Unable to print this part. ]
Dear Friends:
You are cordially invited to attend the first annual Women In Debate
Conference to be held at Georgetown Day High School on March 16-18, 2001.
We
hope you will consider sending teams to participate in this unique event.
Format: We will offer five preliminary rounds of varsity and novice
debate on
this year's high school resolution. Time limits will be 8-3-5 with ten
minutes preparation time per side. In addition to debate rounds, there
will
be several other activities throughout the weekend. There will be two
times
set aside for discussion of issues concerning women in debate. We are
interested in any suggestions for topics. There is space on the entry
form to
indicate ideas. The Georgetown Day debate team will also invite a few
women
who have been successful in predominantly male fields to come and speak
about
their experiences.
Entries: Because of space limitations, the school has asked that we
limit
the conference to 20 teams. We may have to limit your entry to two teams.
If
you wish extra teams please indicate that desire on your entry form and
we
will make every effort to accommodate you. All debaters and judges must
be
female. If the make-up of your team prevents you from sending an all
female
team, please let us know. It may be possible to set up a hybrid team.
Although all competitors must be female, we welcome and encourage any
males
who are interested in attending and participating in the discussions.
Please
return your entry form as soon as possible, but in no event later than
March
3, 2001. You may register or make inquires via email at GDSdb8@aol.com.
If
you wish to fax your entries you may do so at (301) 983-2775. For late
changes and other crises please call Jess Gilburne anytime at (301)
983-2850.
Fees: The entry fee is $25.00 per attendee. There is no charge for
coaches.
We are requesting that teams that are willing and able to send a judge do
so.
Awards: Awards will be presented to the top two teams and five speakers
in
each division.
Food: Modestly priced fare will be available in the school throughout the
tournament. Participants and judges are expected to remain on school
grounds
throughout the tournament.
Housing: We will offer housing for Friday and Saturday nights to students
from outside the Washington area. Please indicate your housing needs as
soon
as possible, especially if you need to request housing for Thursday
and/or
Sunday night. For hotel accommodations we recommend the Ramada Inn of
Bethesda, Maryland at (301)654-1000.
