Attached to the bottom of this email is a copy of the invitation to our
usual Winter tournament.  This year, it will be on January 5-6 (Friday and
Saturday).  You can also view the invitation in word or html format on our
website at www.masondebate.org and you may register there as well.  Just go
the website, click on the tournament side-bar, then click on the high school
tournament link.  If you have any questions or problems, feel free to email
me.

Dear Debate Coach,

The George Mason University Debate Union is pleased to invite you and your
teams to the Winter 2001 Invitational High School Debate Tournament.  The
tournament will be held Friday and Saturday January 5-6, 2001.

We will have four divisions of debate:

(1)    Four-person Novice (limited to students in their first year of
debate)
(2)    Junior Varsity switch-side (first two years of debate)
(3)    Varsity switch-side division (open to all high school debaters)
(4)    Lincoln-Douglas debate using the January LD topic

Six preliminary round of standard cross-examination debate will be offered
in all divisions followed by Quarterfinals in both switch-side divisions
(depending upon entries).  The national high school topic for the tournament
is

Resolved: That the United States federal government should significantly
increase protection of privacy in one or more of the following areas:
employment, medical records, consumer information, search and seizure.

If you decide to attend, please mail/fax the enclosed form before January 1,
2001 to assure your slot in the tournament.  After January 1, please phone
in any entries or change in entries.  Entries can be faxed to 703-993-1096
or submitted through our online registration form at www.masondebate.org.

AWARDS:  Switch-side debate: awards will be presented to the top five or ten
speakers in each division, depending on the number of entries.  All teams
reaching the elimination rounds will receive awards.  Four-person debate:
awards will be presented to the top affirmative and negative teams and the
top three affirmative and negative speakers.  Lincoln-Douglas debaters
reaching the elimination rounds will receive an award.  Sweepstakes: These
awards will be based on the combined performance of an appropriate number of
teams from each school.

FEES: There will be a $20.00 fee for each person entered in to the
tournament.  Judges may be hired at $45.00 for a half-judge (for one team)
and $90.00 for a whole judge (for two teams or one four person unit).
Lincoln-Douglas fees are $20.00 per person.  Hired judges for
Lincoln-Douglas will be $30.00 per debater.  Please remit a $25.00
pre-registration fee with your entry, or if more convenient, you may submit
total fees.  All checks should be payable to Dr. Warren Decker.  Total fees
are assessed as of Wednesday, January 3, and no refunds will be made for
drops after that time.

FINAL REGISTRATION will be held on campus in Robinson Hall B, Lobby, from
10:00 am to 11:00 am, on Friday, January 5, 2001.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS: GMU is easily accessible.  From I-495, the Capital
Beltway, take I-66 West to Route 123 South (the sign says GMU), go to the
seventh traffic light and turn left on to campus.  From the West, I-81
intersects with I-66, go East to Route 123 south and follow the above
directions.  For teams flying in, please contact us for travel arrangements
to and from the airport.  Dulles airport is most convenient, with Reagan
National next in line.  To get to the University Center Comfort Inn, go S.
on 123 as above, but make a right at the second traffic light on to Highway
50.  Follow Highway 50 approximately 1&1/2 miles and the motel will be on
your right.  Caution: after about one mile, Highway 50 turns right at the
third light.

WEATHER: In the event of inclement weather, the tournament will only be
canceled if
                  Fairfax County Public Schools are closed, in which case
the tournament will
                  be rescheduled.  Otherwise, the tournament will be held as
scheduled.
