To The National High School Debate Community:
An Invitation to Attend the 3rd Annual NDCA Invitational Debate Tournament
It's all about coaches. Without them, nothing else in this activity works
very well. Without coaches there is nobody to coordinate candy sales, enter
tournaments, drive the van, judge rounds, fight with administrators, persuade
reluctant parents, lobby institute directors, host tournaments, put up with
novices, and also be parents, counselors, friends, and college letter
writers. For their efforts, coaches are paid next to nothing while working
twice as hard as their teaching colleagues work. Without coaches, nothing
works very well.
The National Debate Coaches Association is dedicated to the cause of
advancing the debate coaching profession. The Barton Scholars is our primary
education program. Every summer, the Barton Scholars program sends dozens of
coaches to summer workshops. It is a direct and important contribution to
the goal of coach retention and training. And it benefits all of us.
While the NDCA gets important contributions for this program from the
National Forensic League and our friends who run summer workshops, a good
deal of the money is raised through our annual tournament. Please attend if
you can.
The Board of Directors of the National Debate Coaches Association is pleased
to extend this invitation to the third annual NDCA Invitational Debate
Tournament. Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio Texas will host
this years tournament on the weekend of November 3-4, 2000. The NDCA
Invitational will be a TOC qualifying tournament at the semifinal level.
Varsity and Novice (first topic) divisions of Lincoln-Douglas and Policy
Debate will be offered. Six preliminary rounds of debate will be offered in
both varsity divisions and five preliminary rounds will be held in novice.
Due to governing body rules in the state of Texas, we must finish the
tournament on Saturday night, November 4th. While the schedule will be
tight, you will have a full day on Sunday to relax and travel home. You
might also wish to arrive early since rounds will not start until afternoon
on Friday, November 3rd. Come enjoy one of Americaâ^À^Ùs great cities and make
an important contribution to the future of American High School debate.
To enter, please send email to this address. There are no limits on entries,
but the availability of hired judging will be limited. We will not be able
to offer a hired judging option for the novice divisions. Paper invitations
will be mailed next week to the NDCA membership data base and the St. Markâ^À^Ùs
tournament list. If you want to make sure you receive a paper invitation,
please reply to this message with a name and full address. If you enter by
email (preferred) please indicate the name of the school, the full address
and the names (numbers will do if you are not sure) of the entries by
division.
Entry fees: Varsity Policy Debate--$75.00 per team. Varsity Lincoln-Douglas
Debate--$50.00 per entry. Novice Policy Debate--$30.00 per team. Novice Linc
oln-Douglas Debate--$20.00 per entry. A limited amount of hired judging for
varsity division entries only will be available at the rate of $150.00 for a
full judge (covers two entries) or $75.00 for a half judge (covers one entry).
Hotel: The San Antonio Airport Hilton will host the event. It is located at
611 NW Loop 410. Rooms must be booked by October 19th in order to get the
special rate of $85.00 per room for up to four people per room. The phone
number at the Hilton is 1-877-377-7227 (toll free direct).
I hope you will join us in San Antonio. Also please join me in extending
thanks to Kandi King and Winston Churchill High School.
