Preseason Classic 2001

Who: Anyone who is interested... please read on...

What: Preseason tournament to give teams a guaranteed 8 rounds (plus
elims from quarters). Additionally half of the first day would be
allotted for presentation of issues on the topic. Each attending school
would be responsible for a 15-minute presentation on a subject germane
to the policy topic. These could include, but are not limited to,
cases, disadvantages, kritiks, topicality violations, and counterplans.
Each school would have to clear their topic with the tournament director
so as to prevent repetition. Each school would be required to provide
research cites for both sides of the issue they present. The judging
pool would consist of participating coaches and hired judges from the
area.

When: Late August 2001. Most likely August 24-26

Where: Somewhere in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. TBD.

Why: The idea is that not only would the teams involved get 8 rounds
guaranteed but they also would get to have an open discussion of issues
coming out of the institutes before the season starts. This type of
interaction with other schools and teams would give everyone a chance to
work out the major kinks in strategy effectively. Schools would also
get a jumpstart on research for the subjects on which they need
information. This tournament would also provide coaches the chance to
judge rounds on the topic to get a feel for the issues so they can
better help their squads prepare for the season.

How: Here are a few of the specifics for the tournament as it stands now

Each school can bring 2 teams. The tournament will have a total of
25-30 teams.

Entry fee for 8 guaranteed round plus the seminar would be $150 (2nd
team $125)

Events: Friday (seminar + 3 rounds); Saturday (5 rounds); Sunday (elims
+ awards)

Sponsorship is in the works for tournament to help defer costs outside
entry fees (hotel rooms, citation copies at seminar, etc)

Those who respond by email will receive formal invitations when they go
out in the spring.

Thanks for you attention. See you next fall.
