2001 East Grand Rapids Pioneer Classic Debate Tournament October 19th -21st,
2001

You are cordially invited to East Grand Rapids^Ò fourteenth annual debate
tournament. The Pioneer Classic will provide competition in the Varsity and
Novice divisions of Cross Examination debate on the 2001 topic - Resolved: That
the United States federal government should establish a foreign policy
significantly limiting the use of weapons of mass destruction.

THE TOURNAMENT:
Teams must register by Tuesday, October 16th, space permitting. Registration
MUST be by Email to egrdebate@yahoo.com, Mail, or FAX . Email registration is
greatly preferred, and will speed up confirmation substantially. Please DO NOT
attempt to register by phone, notes at tournaments or with students. Last year
we reached capacity in both divisions and had to turn several entrants away,
particularly those who registered ^Óinformally,^Ô so please enter early.
Confirmations will be returned to all registrants with final information,
transportation directions and instructions for Final Confirmation.

The Varsity Division will consist of six preliminary debates: three rounds on
Friday and three on Saturday. If our numbers stay constant, we will be
breaking to Double Octo-Finals. Quarterfinals through Finals will be held
Sunday Morning at the Grand Rapids Hilton

The Novice Division will be TWO PERSON, SWITCH SIDES. This is a change from
previous years. There will be five preliminary rounds. The first two will be
randomly paired with the remainder paired appropriately. We will attempt to
clear to Octofinals, given sufficient numbers. Novice rounds are held next
door, at EGR Middle School, which is a very short walk, even with evidence.

The Pioneer Classic is a Tournament of Champions qualifier at the Quarterfinals
level.

East Grand Rapids is committed to expanding opportunity through debate. Towards
that end, we have minimized trophies at our tournament. In lieu of trophies, a
donation will be made in the debaters^Ò names to help finance scholarships for
Urban Debate League students who attend summer institutes. We are excited about
this opportunity to give back to our activity and broaden our community. We
have received many comments on this topic and we welcome further feedback on
the subject.

FEES:
Fees for the tournament are $60 per two person Varsity team, $45 per two person
Novice Team. Boxed lunches on Saturday are included in the registration fee. On
Friday, dinner will be sold for minimal cost. Although limited housing will be
available, first preference will be given to those teams traveling a great
distance to the tournament. Please use our form for housing requests rather
than arranging it individually, as that is logistically difficult. In Either
division, one judge is required for every one or two teams. All judges are
committed one round beyond their school^Òs elimination. A limited number of
hired judges will be available for $140 each. Please contact us ASAP if you
need hired judges. Entries, judges and fees will be frozen on Tuesday October
16th at 6PM.

LODGING:
The Grand Rapids Hilton Inn, 4747 28th Street SE, once again will be the
official tournament hotel, providing rooms at a special rate of $75 for one to
four persons. The cutoff date for the room block is October 1st, and there is
another event occurring at the hotel that weekend, so Early Reservations are
helpful in securing double double rooms. The Hotel asks that schools send
Rooming Lists to assist in Registration. The Hotel has a swimming pool,
exercise room, and sauna. It is located convenient to fast food, several
quality Debate-Schedule-Friendly restaurants and is a 10-15 minute drive from
the school. For reservations call (616) 957-0100 and ask for Judith Young,
Head of Group Sales. Tell her that you are with the EGR Debate Tournament.
