I do not have posting privileges. Would you mind forwarding the invitation
to the Blake tournament to the CX-L and the LD-L? Thanks. I have attached
it in three different formats. Feel free to pick the easiest way to forward
the text.
Dear Debate Coach,
The National Forensic League Chapter of the Blake School is honored to
extend to your school an invitation to attend the Thirty-NinthAnnual
John Edie Holiday Debate Tournament. We are looking forward to an
extremely competitive pool in both Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate.
We are pleased to announce the following changes for this year:
Tournament of Champions bids are now being awarded to the semifinalists
in policy and, for the first time, to the finalists in Lincoln-Douglas.
Once again this year, we have made arrangements that will allow all
rounds to be held at the tournament hotel, the Hyatt Regency, located in
downtown Minneapolis. Most of the preliminary rounds will take place in
hotel rooms. The rooms used for rounds will not be rooms that people
stay in overnight.
We sincerely hope that you and your teams will be able to join us this
year. Add to your tournament experience a visit to the Mall of America
or watch the unique AHolidazzle@ parade outside of the hotel. Minnesota
may be cold in December but we hope to keep you warm with a variety of
activities. The tournament staff will be more than happy to make
suggestions for good food and fun experiences while you are in town.
DATES: December 14 & 15, 2001
LOCATION: All rounds are held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel located at
1300 Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis.
DIVISIONS: Two divisions will be offered: Varsity Policy and Varsity
Lincoln-Douglas. In policy, the national topic on weapons of mass
destruction will be used. In Lincoln-Douglas, the national
January-February topic will be used. You may enter a maximum of four
policy teams and four Lincoln-Douglas debaters. More teams will be
accommodated if rooms exist after the registration deadline.
FORMAT: Registration will be 10:00 to 11:30 A.M. on Friday. Results
are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The final round of policy will
follow awards at 5:30. There will be six preliminary rounds and a break
to quarterfinals following round six. If entries warrant, octafinals
will be held during round six. The first two rounds will be preset
randomly with geographical constraints. Rounds three through six will
be powered high-low within brackets. Lincoln-Douglas will be flighted
through the preliminary rounds and will follow the same schedule as
policy. Depending on the number of entries in each division, the above
schedule is subject to change. Speech time in policy will be 8-3-5 with
5 minutes prep time. Time limits in Lincoln-Douglas will be
6-3-7-3-4-6-3 with 3 minutes prep time.
JUDGING: One judge must be provided for one or two policy teams. Two
judges are required for three or four policy entries. A half-time judge
will be obligated to judge 4 rounds. Because of flighting in
Lincoln-Douglas, you will need to bring one judge for every four
Lincoln-Douglas debaters. We will have a limited number of policy and
LD judges available for hire at $150.
REGISTRATION AND FEES: We are required to pay for the rooms that are
used at the hotel for the actual rounds. Because we have to pay for
the rooms, it is important that we know the number of teams you are
entering as early as possible. Please return your completed
registration no later than Monday, December 10, 2001. Include your fees
with registration, if possible. All fees must be paid no later than
tournament registration. No refunds will be made after December 12,
2001.
LODGING: The Hyatt Regency has offered a special rate of $69.50 for 1-4
persons in a room. Their normal room rate is up to three times the
special rate offered during the tournament. Rates are extended two
nights before and after the tournament if you want to stay in town and
do some last minute holiday shopping at the Mall of America.
To make your reservations at the Hyatt, call (612) 370-1234. Identify
yourself as being part of the Blake School Holiday Debate Tournament.
We have a limited number of rooms reserved so make your reservations
early. Rooms at the $69.50 rate are only guaranteed until December 12.
The parking ramp adjacent to the Hyatt is city owned and is expensive.
It cannot accommodate large vans or buses. If you want cheaper parking
or have a large van, there is a parking lot a block from the hotel that
has better rates. School buses can be parked on the street by the
Convention Center and a special permit is needed to do so. To obtain
this permit, notify the Hyatt upon registration.
OTHER INFORMATION: An outstanding coach award is presented each year.
Please consider an appropriate nomination. Forms for this will be
available at registration. A student will be asked to judge the final
round of policy debate. The student selected will be the person with
the highest number of speaker points that is not in the final round.
Low point wins will be allowed. Maverick policy debaters will be
allowed to win but will receive a maximum of 30 speaker points and will
not be allowed to advance to elimination rounds. Judges may, if they
choose, disclose their decisions. However, we request that oral
comments not be made until after a speed ballot has been turned in to
the tab room.
We hope that we can provide you with an enjoyable tournament experience.
