Debaters, Teachers, and Coaches:
Miami in the winter! Take off the jackets and the coats, throw on
t-shirts and shorts and come on down. The Gulliver Preparatory Debate
Team is pleased to announce its first national debate tournament, the
Gulliver Tropics Invitational. We encourage the attendance of any high
school in the country seeking a highly competitive, organized, and all
around wonderful debate tournament.
FORMAT
Our tournament will consist of both policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate
with novice and varsity divisions. The novice and varsity policy division
will offer six preliminary and four or five elimination rounds depending
upon the tournament size. Each school may enter an unlimited number of
teams prepared to debate both sides of the “weapons of mass
destruction” topic. The novice and varsity LD division will follow
the January/February topic, also debating six preliminary rounds and four
to five elimination rounds. All rounds will follow the standard NFL
format with eight minutes of preparation time.
JUDGING INFORMATION
Every school is responsible for providing one QUALIFIED judge for every
two teams. A limited number of hired judges are available at $130 per
judge.
Qualified judges for either division include:
(1) Head Coach
(2) Assistant Coach
(3) Former high school debater of at least 3 years
(4) Former college debater of at least 2 years
(5) Current college debater
FEES
$65 per team
$130 per hired judge
$15 drop fee
$10 School Fee
A drop fee will be added for all drops made after Wednesday, January 16
(after 4:00pm).
REGISTRATION
The registration form must be received by Monday, January 9, 2002. If you
cannot have the forms mailed by then, please fax them to (305) 665-3791
or emailed to Gulliverdebate@aol.com. We will not accept telephone
registrations or changes. Any post-registration changes must be faxed or
emailed. If you do not hear from us by Wednesday, January 16 please call
the debate office immediately. Space is limited; please apply early to
ensure your entry.
