Dear Friends,
Here's the invitation to the 2002 Lexington Winter Tournament.
Folks in the Northeast should note that our one-day JV/novice tournament will
be held this year on November 10, 2001, a week earlier than usual, in response
to the Newburgh/Glenbrooks rescheduling. That invitation will be available
soon. We hope you'll come to both!

Please attend Lexington's annual winter tournament, to be held
Friday through Sunday, January 18 through 20, 2002, at Lexington High School.
Once again, we will provide high quality competition, efficient administration,
and the best possible judging. We are a TOC qualifier at quarterfinals in
both policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate. Teams from 27
states and the Federal City have attended our tournament; we think you should do
it, too.
RESOLUTIONS: In policy, the national high school
resolution; in Lincoln-Douglas, the NFL January-February resolution, to be
announced about December 1 by the NFL national office.
FORMAT: Three divisions. In varsity policy debate, we will
offer six preliminary and four or five
elimination rounds. Novice policy debate will offer five
preliminary rounds and an appropriate number of elimination rounds.
Lincoln-Douglas will offer five preliminary and four or five elimination rounds.
Preparation time is eight minutes in
policy and four in Lincoln-Douglas.
This is a TWO DAY tournament in Lincoln-Douglas and
novice. Nothing happens on Sunday except quarters, semis and finals in varsity
policy. Ballots and trophies are distributed at Saturday's awards assembly.
ELIGIBILITY: The Lincoln-Douglas and varsity divisions are
open to anyone who wishes to enter. A novice at this tournament is a debater who
has not
competed in policy debate prior to September 1, 2001. People who went to policy
debate institute last summer are not eligible in this division.
ENTRY LIMITS: Initially, five varsity teams, five
Lincoln-Douglas debaters, and three novice teams per school. Extra entries will
go on a waiting list, But please note that our first priority is to grant
additional varsity policy and LD entries.
JUDGES: We hope schools will make every effort to cover
their entries with qualified judges. One judge must be supplied for every four
students or fraction thereof, regardless of division. Advanced, experienced
policy debaters (third or fourth year strongly preferred) may judge in the
novice
division. Very qualified judges indeed are expected in the
LD and varsity policy divisions. For hired judging, see below.
HOUSING: Available for Friday and Saturday night *for
competing students and student judges in the novice division*.We reserve the
right to close housing when we have received 200 requests, so early response is
very important. Please understand that meeting the *entry* deadline does not
guarantee that housing is available. *Please return the enclosed form by surface
mail or email, or fax it to 781 861 2440. Students should bring sleeping bags.
Thursday and Sunday night housing is particularly limited and may not be
available if requested after December 20.
Coaches and other adults may secure housing at one of our
fine local hostelries. For most, the favorite is still the somewhat
controversial Battle Green Inn (781 862 6100). The Battle Green has become quite
a cult attraction among debate coaches; it is right in the heart of Lexington
Center, walking distance from the high school. Other housing includes the
Holiday Inn-Express (formerly the TraveLodge, formerly the Days Inn, formerly
the Catch Penny, 781 861 0850), and the Sheraton
Lexington (the nicest; 781 862 8700).
FOOD: Dinner is served on Friday night; lunch is served on
Saturday. This cost is included in your
entry fees.
FEES: $10 school fee
$50 per varsity unit
$50 per novice unit
$25 per Lincoln-Douglas debater
$130 per hired judge
FEES ARE FIXED AT 10 pm Sunday, January 13. Nuisance
taxes, in addition to original charges, are assessed for late changes according
to the following schedule:
$15 per change from Wednesday 10 pm to Friday 7 am
$25 per change from Friday 7 am to registration
$35 per change at the registration table
These are the famous Michael H. Prosser Nuisance Taxes.
Accepting our invitation accepts these rules.
