Subject: MICHIGAN TOURNAMENT INVITE - DEC 7,8,9
The 2001 University of Michigan High School Debate Tournament
Friday, December 7th - Sunday, December 9th
On behalf of The Michigan Debate Team, we are pleased to invite you to the
4th Annual University of Michigan debate tournament held on the Central
Campus of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor on Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday, December 7, 8, and 9, 2001.
The tournament will provide competition in the Varsity, Junior-Varsity, and
Novice divisions of 2001 Cross Examination topic - Resolved: That the
United States Federal Government should establish a foreign policy
significantly limiting the use of weapons of mass destruction. We are
pleased to announce that the tournament is now certified as a TOURNAMENT OF
CHAMPIONS QUALIFIER IN THE SEMI-FINALS FOR POLICY DEBATE IN THE VARSITY
DIVISION.
HOW TO REGISTER
Teams must register by Tuesday, December 4th, space permitting.
Registration must be by mail, phone, fax, or e-mail (gabriels@umich.edu).
Email is greatly preferred, and will speed up confirmation of your entries.
Please do not attempt to register by phone or with any members of the
Michigan Debate team other than the Assistant Director of Debate, Gabriel
Scannapieco. Last year we reached capacity in all divisions and had to
turn several entrants away, particularly those who registered "informally,"
so please enter early to assure your teams a spot at the tournament.
Confirmations will be returned to all registrants with final information,
transportation directions and instructions for Final Confirmation.
Final registration will be held from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Courtyard Inn
by Marriott on Friday, December 7th. Tournament fees are due at this time.
You will receive your tournament packets at registration as well.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The varsity division will consist of six preliminary debates: three rounds
on Friday and three on Saturday. We plan to break the top 32 teams with a
record of 4 wins or better. If our numbers stay constant, we will be
breaking to a full double octa-final round. If there are insufficient
numbers to fill 32 debates, we will proceed with a partial double
octa-final round. All preliminary and elimination rounds will be held on
the Central Campus.
Both the junior varsity and the novice divisions will also consist of six
preliminary rounds with three on Friday and three on Saturday. Each is
currently scheduled to clear to semi-final rounds. Novice debate will
allow both two-person switch side teams and four-person teams.
In light of the recent terrorist attacks upon the United States, the
Michigan Debate Tournament will make a donation to the Red Cross in the
name of students winning speaker awards.
Each team entered has a 3 round prelim judging obligation. All Judges are
obligated for the first elimination round on Saturday. Judges are further
obligated to judge one round after the elimination of their last team.
TOURNAMENT FEES
Fees for the tournament are $75 per team. A limited number of hired judges
will be available. Fees for hired judging are as follows: 3 rounds, $60; 6
rounds, $120.
LODGING
There are two tournament hotels, the Marriott Courtyard Inn and the
Marriott Fairfield Inn, with tournament registration at the Courtyard. The
Courtyard has a limited number of rooms available for a special rate of
$79.00 a night and the Fairfield has a larger block of rooms reserved at
$59.00/night (including breakfast). These are great rates for hotels
located close to campus. The cutoff date for the room blocks is Friday,
November 16th, but Paul, the manager, told me that there is a good
possibility that there would be additional rooms available after the
deadline. The Hotel asks that schools send Rooming Lists to assist in
Registration. The hotels are located next to one another and are right off
the I-94 exit for State Street. They are located a short 5-10 minute drive
from the tournament. Don't worry about food -- there are plenty of
restaurants located near the two hotels, including lots of fast food joints
and a few "late night" spots like Bennigan's and Damon's.
