Greetings!
The Hopkins High School Debate Team and Booster Club would like to cordially invite you and your team to attend the Hopkins Royal Cup to be held on October 11 and 12, 2002. We hope that you can join us and celebrate the 9th Annual Royal Cup! The tournament will be held at Hopkins High School, located in Minnetonka, MN. We are just 10 minutes from downtown Minneapolis.
The tournament will feature outstanding competition in both Policy and Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Last year the Royal Cup was one of the largest tournaments in Minnesota, with over 80 varsity teams in both Policy and L-D. 40 schools from California, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Louisiana were in attendance. This year Varsity Lincoln-Douglas (debating the September-October resolution) will have a bid to The Tournament of Champions in semifinals and Varsity Policy will have a bid in finals.
Beyond stiff competition, the Royal Cup would like to show you and your debaters midwestern hospitality. We pride ourselves on the fine cuisine offered in our coaches' lounge and the food we provide your students. Also, if you are visiting us from out of town and would like housing for your debaters, we will do our best to accommodate your requests if you fill out the attached housing form. We want you to enjoy the competition and quality of the Royal Cup.
This year we will be offering varsity and novice Policy and L-D debate. In varsity Policy and L-D, we will break to Octofinals. In novice L-D, we will break to Quarterfinals and semifinals in novice policy because the novice debaters will be running on a separate one-day schedule to help ease your beginning students into the rigors of big tournament competition. Varsity L-D rounds will be double-flighted. We hope that this will assist teams in the judging burden so that you can have your very best judges here with your students. Consolation and speaker awards will be offered in all four divisions.
Enclosed you will find a copy of our tournament schedule, site rules, entry forms, and hotel information. You may e-mail or fax your registration by October 9, 2002 at 5:00pm CST. Events Offered
Policy debate will follow the traditional two-person c-x style. Debaters will argue the 2002/03 resolution. Varsity Policy finalists will receive a TOC bid. Constructive are eight minutes, rebuttals are five minutes, and each team will receive 8 minutes of preparation time.
In Lincoln-Douglas we will offer competition on the September/October NFL resolution in Varsity and Novice. Varsity Entries in L-D will receive a TOC bid in Semifinals.
Entry Costs
Varsity Policy $40 per team
Novice Policy $20 per team
Varsity L-D $30 per debater
Novice L-D $20 per debater
All school should include their fees with registration. Please make checks payable to Hopkins High School Debate.
All fees will be assessed by October 9, 2002.
Tournament Entries must be received by October 9, 2002.
Confirmations will be sent out upon receipt of your registration and no later than Oct. 10th.
JUDGES
Judge Obligations in Policy: 1 or 2 teams = 1 full judge
Judge Obligations for L-D: 1-4 debaters = 1 full judge
Teams who show up without their judges will be FINED an $80.00 fee per day for each team that is not covered and may not be allowed to debate, depending on hired judge availability.

A limited number of judges will be available for hire, if you request judges NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 1, 2002.

Judges will be hired by October 1. If you need a judge after that date you MUST arrange to find one.
Meals
The Hopkins Debate Boosters will have a spectacular judges and coaches' lounge for the entire tournament. Students may purchase a wide variety of concessions and meals on both days in the cafeteria.
**We ask that you not leave the building for food, since the schedule will not permit it. **
Tournament Rules
* Judges may disclose at their discretion, BUT PLEASE KEEP THE TOURNAMENT RUNNING ON TIME BY SUBMITTING THE PROPER SPEED BALLOT BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR COMMENTS. Oral comments will not replace a written ballot and may not take more than 10 minutes at the conclusion of a round.
* Fabrication or alteration of evidence is strictly prohibited.
* A tournament ethics committee will be announced at the start of the tournament. The committee will be headed by the tournament director and include the tab staff.
* The Royal Cup tab room will be open at convenient times for coaches to view the records of their teams after the start of round 3 in policy and round 4 in L-D. Coaches, please use the proper times to view your students' results and understand that while we are tabbing rounds, we need to be left to work.
* Schools MUST provide qualified judges. A limited amount of judges will be available for hire.
*Visiting schools must respect the rules of Hopkins High School in regard to its no smoking policy.
