Subject: 34th NYC Invitational Debate Tournament
Dear Moderator:
The Bronx Science Forensic Boosters cordially invite you and your team to
participate in the Thirty-Fourth Annual New York City Invitational Debate
Tournament. We are delighted to continue a tradition of offering a
challenging and competitive tournament early in the year.
DATES: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 18-20, 2002
PLACE: The Bronx High School of Science
EVENTS: Varsity Policy Debate. Each two-person team must be prepared to
debate both sides of the national resolution. Seven preliminary rounds will
lead to elimination rounds as necessary.
Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Contestants must be prepared to debate both
sides of the September/October resolution. Seven preliminary rounds will
lead to sextodecimo-finals.
For Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate, no losing records will advance and at
least 4 rounds will be power-paired.
Initially, each school may enter up to 3 slots per division. Remaining
entries are subject to a wait-list which will be on a first-come,
first-serve basis, with consideration given to geographical proximity.
Wait-list entries will not be released earlier than the registration
deadline.
TROPHIES: To all teams and debaters reaching the elimination rounds. To not
less than the 10 policy debaters compiling the best speaker points during
the preliminary rounds. To not less than the 10 Lincoln-Douglas debaters
compiling the best speaker points during the preliminary rounds.
FEES: Each school (registration) - $20.00. Each Policy Debate team -
$70.00. Each Lincoln-Douglas debater - $35.00.
JUDGING RESPONSIBILITIES: Each school must provide one full qualified adult
judge for each two debate teams or three Lincoln-Douglas debaters entered.
Some hired judges will be available on the following scale: one varsity
team or one or two Lincoln-Douglas debaters, $80.00; two varsity teams or
three Lincoln-Douglas debaters, $160.00. Last minute judge requests will
not be honored. No judge may cover more than one category.
ALL FEES ARE ASSESSED AS OF 6:00 PM (NEW YORK CITY TIME) OCTOBER 4, AND
MUST BE PAID REGARDLESS OF LATER CHANGES OR CANCELLATIONS.
HOTELS: We have reserved a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn, located at
200 Tarrytown Road in Elmsford, about 20 minutes north of Bronx Science.
Call the sales office at (914) 592-5680 and ask for the rooms reserved for
the Bronx tournament.
REGISTRATION: Completed registration forms must be received before 6:00 p.m.
(New York City time), October 4th. Please be sure to list your contestants'
names and judges' names on your registration. Judge and contestant names
are considered final at that time. Send all registration via email to
bigbronx@hotmail.com. LABEL THE RE: LINE CLEARLY TO INDICATE THAT THE
MESSAGE IS FOR REGISTRATION. Any changes after that date are subject to the
following administrative charges which are in addition to all registration
fees: October 11 through and including October 15, $5 per name change and
thereafter, $15 per name change. You may request more slots than indicated
(so long as you cover your judging needs with qualified adult judges) which
will be granted on a first-come, first serve basis, with consideration given
to geographical proximity. Schools will be notified as to wait-listed
competitors promptly after the registration deadline. Schools in arrears
from past years may not register. No independent entries.
On Friday, October 18, registration will start at 10:00 A.M. and will take
place in the school's auditorium. CONTESTANTS NOT REGISTERED BY 1:00 P.M.
WILL NOT BE SCHEDULED FOR ROUND 1.
CONFIRMATIONS: Preliminary confirmations will be emailed on receipt of
registration. All registrations are subject to receipt of payment in full
of all fees which must be received within five (5) days of receipt of your
email registration. Make all checks payable to Bronx Science Forensics
Boosters and send it to the school, 75 West 205th Street, Bronx, New York
10468, Attention: Debate and Speech.
