2002 East Grand Rapids Debate Tournament October 25th-27th, 2001
You are cordially invited to East Grand Rapids^Ò fourteenth annual debate
tournament on October 25th-27th, 2002. East Grand Rapids will provide
competition in the Varsity and Novice divisions of Cross Examination debate on
the 2002 topic - Resolved: That the United States federal government should
significantly increase public health services for mental health care in the
United States.
THE TOURNAMENT:
There is no entry deadline or entry limit. We will accept entries until we are
full. We were full 3 weeks before the tournament last year, although most teams
were allowed in off the wait list. Entry MUST be by Email to
egrdebate@yahoo.com, or FAX . Email entry is greatly preferred, and will speed
up confirmation substantially. Faxed entries have been known to get lost in the
EGR system. Please DO NOT attempt to enter by phone, notes at tournaments or
with students. Last year we reached capacity in both divisions and initially
had to turn several entrants away, particularly those who entered ^Óinformally,^Ô
so please enter early. Confirmations will be returned to all entrants with
final information, transportation directions and instructions for Final
Confirmation.
Final Confirmation of your entry must be completed by Thursday evening, October
24th, by 8:00 PM. This must include full names of debaters and judges, judge
philosophies and contact information. Confirm by email at egrdebate@yahoo.com
or by phone at (616) 235-7652. Email is greatly preferred.
In exchange for appropriate registration fees, packets will be distributed on
Friday, October 25th, from 11:00 PM until 12:30 PM in front of the cafeteria of
the High School
East Grand Rapids is a Tournament of Champions qualifier at the Quarterfinals
level.
The Varsity Division will consist of six preliminary debates: four rounds on
Friday and two on Saturday. Rounds one and two will be randomly paired, with
the remainder being High Low within brackets. Ties will be broken on H/L
Points, Opponents Wins, DH/L Points, and then Total Points. We will never lag
pair rounds. We will be breaking to Double Octo-Finals. Quarterfinals through
Finals will be held Sunday Morning at the Grand Rapids Hilton
The Novice Division will be TWO PERSON, SWITCH SIDES. There will be five
preliminary rounds. The first two will be randomly paired with the remainder
paired appropriately. We will attempt to clear to Octofinals, given sufficient
numbers. Novice rounds are held next door, at EGR Middle School, which is a
very short walk, even with evidence.
East Grand Rapids is committed to expanding opportunity through debate. Towards
that end, we have minimized trophies at our tournament. In lieu of trophies, a
donation will be made in the debaters^Ò names to help finance scholarships for
Urban Debate League students who attend summer institutes. We are excited about
this opportunity to give back to our activity and broaden our community. We
have received many comments on this topic and we welcome further feedback on
the subject.
All Judges will be required to fill out a Judge Philosophy Sheet. A possible
format is included, but feel free to make your own. Please have all judges
complete this before the tournament and send the sheet by Email to
egrdebate@yahoo.com by Tuesday, October 22nd. We will distribute these
philosophy sheets to all at the tournament, and so getting the philosophies in
advance of the tournament and in electronic form is necessary.
FEES:
Fees for the tournament are $60 per two person Varsity team, $45 per two person
Novice Team. Boxed lunches on Saturday are included in the registration fee. On
Friday, dinner will be sold for minimal cost. In Either division, one judge is
required for every one or two teams. Half of six is four. All judges are
committed one round beyond their school^Òs elimination. A limited number of
hired judges will be available for $150 each. Please contact us ASAP if you
need hired judges. Drops after Monday, October 21st will still be charged entry
and judge fees.
LODGING:
The Grand Rapids Hilton Inn, 4747 28th Street SE, once again will be the
official tournament hotel, providing rooms at a special rate of $75 for one to
four persons. The cutoff date for the room block is October 1st, and there is
another event occurring at the hotel that weekend, so Early Reservations are
helpful in securing double double rooms. The Hotel asks that schools send
Rooming Lists to assist in Registration. The Hotel has a swimming pool,
exercise room, and sauna. It is located convenient to fast food, several
quality Debate-Schedule-Friendly restaurants and is a 10-15 minute drive from
the school. For reservations call (616) 957-0100 and ask for Judith Young,
Head of Group Sales. Tell her that you are with the EGR Debate Tournament.
