September 25, 2002
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
We are truly excited to announce and invite you and your team to participate in the 17th Annual Colorado Classic to be held at the University of Colorado's main campus in Boulder. This year's Colorado Classic is going to occur on November 1-2, 2002. With excellent judging and tournament administration, we know that these will be two enjoyable days of competition in beautiful Boulder.
This season's Colorado Classic should prove to be its best yet in both individual events and debate. The Colorado Classic has been very fortunate to be designated a Tournament of Champions qualifier at the semifinals level in Lincoln-Douglas and at the finals level in Policy debate. As such, we hope to continue the Colorado Classic as a forum to allow the best and brightest from around the region and country to build relationships through friendly and intense competition.
Although last season's Colorado Classic was from nearly all accounts a rousing success, there are several things that we are hoping to improve and clarify. We are maintaining our individual events format with the exception of switching the flights of DI and DUO (see schedule). Individual events shall be separated into two patterns as is indicated in the tournament schedule. All pattern A preliminary rounds will occur on Friday evening. All pattern B events will occur on Saturday morning. This will only serve to help your individual events competitors. Moreover, brackets in elimination debates will not be broken. Furthermore, we are proud to announce that this year students will be allowed to double enter in two individual events in a single pattern. This means that a single student could compete in 2 individual events in both pattern A and pattern B. Finally, this year's tournament will maintain integrated (varsity/novice) preliminary and elimination debates, accompanied by novice “break-out” debate rounds, which are explained later in this invitation. Also, to speed up the general awards ceremony, awards in elimination debates (except semifinals) will be distributed in the rounds.
Please note: because of limited room space, UMC construction, and the propensity for a great number of tournament entries, we are asking everyone to please enter as early as you possibly can and also be aware that competition rooms may be a great distance from central meeting areas, such as the UMC. I urge each and every one of you to inform your students of the latter. We do not wish to turn people away. As such, we may have to reserve rooms with significant walking distance.
In 2002, we are looking to continue the great tradition of outstanding judging and fine tournament administration. Returning to direct the tab room is Mr. Craig William Clark, an Internet entrepreneur and University of Colorado at Boulder law student. We hope that you and your students will enjoy this event. The University of Colorado Classic is looking to offer a tournament we can be proud of and where you all can be proud to attend. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me by e-mail: michelinmassey@yahoo.com. I hope to see you all here in Boulder in November!
Sincerely,

Michelin C. Massey
Tournament Director
Tournament Divisions
Individual Events:
Students may compete in Drama, Humor, Poetry, Duo, National Extemp, Foreign Extemp, and Original Oratory. All events will have three preliminary rounds breaking to semifinals where entries warrant (25+ entries). All events will clear to elimination rounds first on ranks and then on speaker points. Scripts are optional in all interpretation events, including Duo. Scripts are not allowed in Original Oratory and are discouraged, but allowed, in both National and Foreign Extemp. Upon registration, you will be informed about the location of the Extemp draw room. Round assignments will be posted in the UMC and in Chemistry. Please inform your students to be mindful of schedule changes and to watch for postings. We will strictly enforce a 10-minute late/disqualification rule after the last performance in each section (in other words if your student shows up more than 10 minutes after the last competitor in the round has performed, he/she will be disqualified).
You should also inform your students about the events schedule. First, students should not watch Flight A final rounds until all of the posts have been released for Flight B. Flight A and B postings for finals should be at the same time, except for United States Extemp. It is critical that if students are entered in either Foreign or United States Extemp that they check both postings before going into the rounds.
Also, if students are entered in both United States and Foreign Extemp and make it to the out-rounds of both, students in FX semifinals and USX finals will be scheduled first in USX. If they make it to FX finals, they will be last speaker in that round. This should help provide easy transition between both Extemp events. If students qualify for both finals in both Extemp events and another event they should speak in both extemp rounds before performing in any other final round.
Finally, if students are double entered, it is ok for the students to leave after their performance and go to the other round to prevent delays in the tournament. Students assume responsibility for being tardy (as explained above).
Debate:
There will be Open (read: Integrated Varsity and Novice) preliminary debates, breaking to Open elimination debates and accompanied by Novice “break-out” rounds in both Lincoln-Douglas and Policy debate. We will have five preliminary rounds of Policy debate, breaking to Octofinals. There will be six preliminary single flight Lincoln-Douglas debate rounds, breaking all 4-2 debaters (up to 32). All elimination rounds (including the novice “break-out” rounds) will be based first on win-loss record, then speaker points, and then strength of opposition. Elimination round brackets will not be broken in open elimination and novice “break-out” rounds. The 2000/2001 resolution regarding weapons of mass destruction shall be used in policy debate. The November/December NFL Lincoln-Douglas resolution (announced on 10/1 by the NFL) shall be debated in L-D.
Speaking times for all policy debates are as follows: 8 minute constructives, 3 minute cross examination, 5 minute rebuttals, and 5 minutes of preparation time for each team. For L-D, the times will be 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 with 3 minutes of preparation time for each debater. Please consult the tournament staff about policy debate tub storage.
Schematics will be posted in the UMC and Chemistry. They will also be handed out in front of CHEM 140. We will strictly enforce a 30-minute late rule from the time that all of the posts have been posted.
Novice “Break-Out” Rounds: After Open (integrated Novice and Varsity) preliminary debates, Open (integrated Varsity and Novice) elimination debates will be held. Novices who qualify for those rounds will be allowed to debate. All novices who are eliminated after the Octofinals of Lincoln-Douglas or Policy debate and non-clearing novices are eligible for novice “break-out” rounds. These rounds will consist of the top novice teams/debaters from each division, based on the number of novice entries for that division. Novices are defined as those students in their first semester of competition in any type of forensic event. Please be sure that your novice does not leave the tournament before novice “break-out” rounds are posted. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact Michelin Massey by e-mail: michelinmassey@yahoo.com.
Double Entry:
Students are allowed and encouraged to double enter between individual event flights and enter in up to two events in each flight. Flight A will consist of United States Extemp (USX), Dramatic Interpretation (DI), Humorous Interpretation (HI), and Poetry Interpretation (POE). Flight B will consist of Foreign Extemp (FX), Duo Interpretation (DUO), and Original Oratory (OO). An example of an acceptable double entry for a single competitor could be Flight A - Dramatic Interpretation and Humorous Interpretation. Flight B - Foreign Extemp and Duo Interpretation. Students participating in debate will not be allowed to double enter in any other event.
Students that enter in two events in a single flight (i.e. HI and DI in Flight A) should go to each round before the round begins and sign-in on the board. After completing their first performance the student should ask the critic to be excused so that he/she can proceed to the other round to perform. If a student is entered in extemp and another event that student should complete their extemp speech before proceeding to participate in the second event.
An appropriate way to sign in is: Michelin Massey (2x) *the “2x” lets the judge know that the competitor is entered in two events in the same flight. *
Students who choose to enter in two events in the same flight assume responsibility for complying with the tardiness rule noted above.
Rules:
Individual Events rules will conform as closely as possible to NFL rules. Any questions about debate rules should be directed to the tournament director. The tournament director reserves the right to deviate from CHSAA or NFL rules in order to ensure smooth and efficient tournament operation. The final arbiter for rules questions on events, debate, or tournament procedure will be the tournament director.
Awards:
Awards will be presented to all competitors qualifying for elimination rounds in events and debate, including the novice “break-out” debate rounds. Debate and events semifinalists shall receive awards at the awards ceremony. Debaters eliminated prior to the semifinal rounds will receive their awards in the room where they were eliminated after the round has been completed. Awards will not be mailed, unless there is an error on the part of the tournament.
The top ten Open Lincoln-Douglas and Policy debate speakers will receive speaker awards. The top five novice Lincoln-Douglas and Policy debate speakers will receive novice speaker awards.
The top three events competitors will receive speaker awards. Sweepstakes will be awarded to the top three schools with overall performance. These awards will be tabulated as follows:
Debate: 4 points per Policy debate preliminary win and 2 points per LD debate preliminary win.
Events: 4 points for each 1st place preliminary rank, 3 points for each 2nd place preliminary rank, and 2 points for each 3rd place preliminary rank.
Judges:
After careful analysis, it is clear to us that an important element in making this tournament a success is having a sufficient number of judges. For this we need your cooperation. We ask that for every 2 policy debate teams, 4 Lincoln-Douglas debaters, or 6 event slots, you provide one judge. We'd like to accommodate as many entries as possible. In order for the tournament to run well, we must have the judging resources to cover every entry. Judges brought by teams may be coaches, former competitors, or even parent volunteers (this is a great opportunity for parents to get involved in the speech and debate world). We will obviously do our best to get judges to the rounds for which they are most qualified. However, judges qualified only in events may be used to cover debate slots and vice-versa should the need arise.
All judges are committed one round beyond the elimination of their last competitor. This includes judges who do not have any advancing competitors. Judges who would like to judge beyond their commitment are encouraged (and exhorted) to do so and should consult the tournament director if you are willing/able. If you know anyone who is willing to be hired, please have him or her contact the tournament director immediately.
If, for any reason, you and/or your judges are unable to complete your judge requirement, please consult the tournament director. Missed ballot collection may result in a $50 fine per missed ballot and the disqualification of competitors. No ballots or trophies will be issued until all fees are settled.
We need your judges or we cannot run this tournament on time. We will be diligently seeking the most outstanding hired judges from all around the nation. We will also need your judges' names and their judge assignment preferences by the Wednesday before the tournament (October 30, 2002).
Judge check-in will be in the Chemistry building in room CHEM 140. CHEM 140 will be the location of the judges' room throughout the duration of the tournament. However, this room will not be open as a lounge until 4:00pm on Friday.
Fees:
Policy Debate Team $40.00
Hired Policy Debate Judge Fee (per team) $35.00
Lincoln-Douglas Debater $40.00
Hired Lincoln-Douglas Debate Judge Fee (per debater) $35.00
Individual Event Entry/Duo Team $5.00
Uncovered Event Entry/Duo Team Judge Fee (per entry) $10.00
Missing Judge Fine/Ballot $50.00
Nuisance Fee/Change $50.00
Remember that one judge covers 2 policy debate teams, 4 Lincoln-Douglas debaters, OR 6 event slots/duo teams. We must use these fractions in order to adequately address our judging needs.
We will be setting fees at 5pm on Wednesday, October 30, 2002. You may make changes after this date if there is space available, but drops will not reduce your fees. Any adds after this point will increase your fees by the appropriate amount. All checks must be made payable to Colorado Classic Debate Association. We reserve the right to prevent competitors from advancing if their school has an unpaid balance. All fees are due the day of the tournament before competition begins! Any teams unable to pay at this time will not be allowed to compete. There will be no exceptions.
Registration:
Registration will close on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at 5:00pm Mountain Standard Time. We will need both the number of entries and names of competitors by this time. Reservations without competitors' names will not be accepted (tabulation is made exponentially easier by having competitors' names prior to the day of registration). Again, the names of your judges and their adjudication preferences will be needed at this time as well.
Entries may be submitted via e-mail, fax, over the phone, or by regular mail (in order of preference).

We will call or e-mail to confirm receipt of your entries. If you do not receive confirmation from Michelin Massey or Craig Clark, it is your responsibility to ensure that entries have been received.
We reserve the right to limit entries at any date to any team. Enter early to ensure that all of your desired slots can be entered in our tournament. In the past, the tournament has become full before the date on which registration closed.
Last minute changes may be made to your registration until 10:00am Mountain Standard Time on Friday, November 1, 2002. These changes will only be accepted by calling the Colorado Classic mobile phone (303.884.3282). Do not leave a voice mail message changing your entries at the last minute. You must speak with a Colorado Classic tournament official. After this point, any changes made will result in a nuisance fee of $50.00 per change. The 10:00am deadline will allow us to schedule rounds and assign judges on time while allowing coaches to make adjustments due to emergency situations. Please help us out by avoiding any last minute changes. These only make the tournament run longer and worse for all involved.
Final registration and fee payment will be in the Chemistry building in room 140. For our returning guests, this building is next to the student center. Starting at 4:00pm on Friday CHEM 140 will be the location of our information desk for the duration of the tournament. Students or coaches with problems finding rooms, missing judges, etc. should report either to this table or to a member of the tournament staff to resolve any of these problems AS SOON AS THE PROBLEM ARISES. Barring any major emergency, this desk will be occupied at all times during the tournament. If the desk is unoccupied and a crisis arises, please report to the tabulation room, whose location is TBA; however, it is vital that you always go to the information desk first.
Schedule:
A schedule is attached. Registration will be from 2:00pm - 3:00pm on Friday, November 1, 2002 in CHEM 140.
Tab/Ballots/Grievances:
We are once again closing tab to coaches, judges, and students. Please bring all problems to the information table (CHEM 140) where we will assist you. The tabulation room will be located in the Chemistry building in a room TBA.
Ballots will be available for inspection starting at 12:00pm on Saturday, November 2, 2002. Ballots will not be available before that time. Coaches are the only ones allowed to peruse ballots. No students. Do not remove any ballots, as they may be needed in tab. Ballots will be passed out after the awards ceremony. If there are any problems with ballots, please notify the judges' table or ballot room staff. The ballot room will also be located in the Chemistry building.

If you have enough judges to cover those numbers, you only have to pay for each individual entry. If you do not have enough judges, you must pay the uncovered judging fee for each debate team/debater/i.e.-duo slot and for the individual entries. We are trying to hire and maintain a consistent and outstanding judging pool that is one of the best in the nation. Thank you for your support.
