Goldback Diversion
Newburgh Free Academy
201 Fullerton Ave.
Newburgh, NY 12550
Dear Colleagues,

Please join us in Newburgh for the latest in our series of Goldback
Diversions, this year on Nov. 8-9, 2002. We promise good food, good
company
and good competition for Policy and Lincoln-Douglas students at the
novice
and varsity levels. Registration will run from 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. and we
hope
to start Round 1 by 4:15. Please try to arrive between 3 and 3:30 as
arriving
earlier or later will put you in the middle of our 2:10 or 3:35 bus runs
--
we recommend patronizing one of the many Newburgh eating establishments,
as a
way to spend some time if you arrive early. Please ask if you need a
recommendation. We will hold five prelims and break to doubles or octos
in
both policy divisions and both LD divisions, depending on registration.
We
are a TOC qualifier at quarters for policy and semis for LD. We offer
housing
for students -- 25 spaces per team -- limit of 250 spaces, so please ask
early. We have very, very few judges for hire, so please bring your own;
if
you have extras, let us know and weâ^À^Ùll hire them. Awards will be
presented to
all teams/individuals in elimination rounds and to an appropriate number
of
the top speakers in every division. There is a local airport and many
others
within a two hour radius of Newburgh -- please ask if you are looking for
more specific transportation information.

ENTRY RULES/LIMITS:
We will initially accept four teams/individuals per division per event
and
will accept on a waiting list any other entries you would like to
register.
Typically, we have been able to accept 6-8 LDers per division from any
given
school, and at least six policy teams per division, but when our
buildings
are full, they will be full, so please get your requests in early if you
want
extra spaces. Our goal is to maximize diversity of participation while
still
trying to allow as many teams/individuals as possible to debate from
bigger
programs.

FEES/JUDGING REQUIREMENTS:
We will charge $50 per team in the policy divisions and $25 per person in
LD.
There will be a $10 school fee and hired judges, to whatever extent they
are
available, will cost $75 for a half judge or $150 for a full judge. No
school
may hire more than one judge in EITHER Policy or LD. We cannot sell
judges we
donâ^À^Ùt have, so please donâ^À^Ùt be surprised if we tell you there are
no more
available. Absolutely no hired judge requests will be honored after Oct.
25,
and we may well have reached our hired judge capacity before that date.
Fees
are fixed as of Nov. 1. Teams/individuals/judges dropped after that date
must
still be paid for. There will be an extra $10 fee per change made at the
table, so please call in any changes before you leave home. Each school
is
expected to bring one qualified judge for every two policy teams (or
fraction
thereof) and one qualified judge for every four LDers (or fraction
thereof).
Adult judges are required for both varsity divisions.
HOUSING:
We will house students on a first-come, first-served basis and we can
guarantee no more than 250 spaces overall. EACH SCHOOL IS LIMITED TO 25
SPACES, INCLUDING STUDENT JUDGES. Housing requests must be submitted by
Oct.
25. Teams that miss this deadline run the risk of not being housed. We
deny
housing to at least some schools every year because requests exceed
availability.

REGISTRATION DEADLINES AND CONTACT INFORMATION:
The registration deadline is Oct. 30, assuming you do not need housing or
hired judges. Otherwise, please make sure to meet the Oct. 25 deadline
for
housing and judges. After that time, we will allocate any remaining
spaces to
teams/individuals on the various waiting lists. The best way to register
is
by e-mail (SherylKaz@aol.com) as our school is changing phone systems and
the
debate office is currently without a working phone line. You may also
call us
at home (845) 565-0815. On the night before the tournament, or the day of
the
tournament, please use ONLY my Cell Phone (914-541-6242).

DIRECTIONS TO NEWBURGH FREE ACADEMY/NORTH JUNIOR HIGH:
Policy debaters should be dropped off at NFA and LDers at North. If you
are
in the Policy Divisions ONLY, you should register at NFA and if you are
in
the LD Divisions ONLY, you should register at North Junior High. If you
have
students in both types of debate, you may pay your fees at either school,
but
please check in with the tables at BOTH schools so that each tab room
knows
you and your students have arrived. We will be feeding and housing kids
at
the school where they are debating, and we will shuttle them all back to
NFA
at the end of the preliminary rounds. NFA is located on Fullerton Avenue
and
North Junior High is located on 9W. To get to either school, you should
take
Exit 10 South, off of I-84. If you are coming from the west, you should
turn
right at the bottom of the exit -- you will be on 9W -- and if you are
going
to North stay on 9W until you see the school on the right. If you are
going
to NFA, stay on 9W for a few blocks and then turn right on North Street
(there is a law firm on the left). NFA is a few blocks further on the
right,
around a large curve. Go to the main entrance at either building.
