20TH ANNUAL
AUBURN VALLEY INVITATIONAL
FORENSIC TOURNAMENT

November 29 - 30, 2002

Dear Coach:

Enclosed you will find information on the twentieth annual Auburn Valley Invitational Forensic Tournament. We offer all of the Washington State events, so please be careful to read conflict patterns and division requirements. This tournament allows relatively large rosters, Tournament of Champions bids in both Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate, and lots of competition against teams from around the Northwest.

REGISTRATION

Registration should be in our hands no later than Wednesday, Nov. 20th. Tournament entries and fees will be set at that time. Drops after that time will not be deducted from the entry fee. Squads will be registered on a first come, first served basis. Receipt of your registration by this date does not guarantee that space in the tournament will still be available. Please register early.

Payment of fees may be made in advance or else during the on-site registration period (see schedule). Payment options are (1) a school check, (2) a copy of your school or district P.O., or (3) a personal check. We cannot register your squad without one of these, in hand, prior to the start of competition.

WASHINGTON STATEâ^À^ÙS SUPERVISION REQUIREMENT

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Assn. (WIAA) requires, and we must enforce, the presence at all times of a certificated staff member, from the same school or school district, supervising your participants. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in school forfeiture and dismissal from the tournament.

LIMITATIONS

Six (6) debate slots per squad. You may split these between divisions and between CX and LD in any manner so long as the total does not exceed six.

Twenty (20) individual event slots per squad. Maximum of six (6) entries per event in each division.

You may enter more participants, but must register them as a second squad on a separate registration form, and pay a second squad fee. Schools that enter more than one squad will not be protected from hitting. Extra squads will be entered on a space-available basis, with all schools registered by Wednesday, November 20th being granted a first squad, first, on a first come, first served basis. A confirmation will be faxed or emailed on Thursday, November 21st.

DIVISIONS

This year we will be offering only three divisions in both Lincoln/Douglas and Cross Examination debate (Novice, J.V. and Open). This format still protects our first-year teams, while giving all others an excellent opportunity to compete against worthy opponents.

We are using the W.S.F.A. explanation for each of these levels, as noted below. Please read these guidelines carefully. Please note that Freshman competition and awards are counted when deciding level of participation.

NOVICE: Open to those freshman, sophomore, and junior students who have had no previous experience in debate prior to the current competitive year; or have six or less rounds of debate competition at invitational, league, or district competition prior to the current competitive year and have not placed fourth or better at TWO invitational tournaments with fifteen or more schools attending.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Open to those students in their first or second year of competition who have not placed first through fourth in level two or higher debate competition at TWO invitational tournaments with fifteen or more schools participating.

OPEN: Open to all students regardless of experience or awards won in debate.

DEBATE

Cross Examination (Policy) debate will use the national topic with the W.S.F.A. topic limitation for Novice competition (noted below). The Lincoln/Douglas topic will be the Nov./Dec. NFL topic.

Times for CX are 8-3-5, with 5 minutes downtime per team.
Times for LD are 6-3-7-3-4-6-3, with 3 minutes downtime per side.

No oral critiques are allowed at this tournament. Judges should not divulge results. Judges must complete and return their ballots as rapidly as possible to keep the tournament running on time. Comments and suggestions should be placed on the ballot. Please instruct your judges not to divulge their verdicts and your debaters not to ask them to.

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS

Individual events will use the following Novice/Senior levels. Novice division is for all contestants in their first year of competition. Senior division is for all other students regardless of class and awards won.
Washington State conflict patterns will be observed:

Pattern A (no Open Div. Debaters) Pattern B

Extemporaneous Impromptu
Dramatic Interp. Humorous Interp.
Expository Oratory
Dual Interp. Oral Interp. (Interp. Reading)

Note: Students may not enter conflicting events. Also, students entered in Open CX or LD may not enter Pattern A events.

JUDGING REQUIREMENTS

Each debate judge covers up to two (2) debate teams (LD or CX). A third team requires a second judge, and so on. Each I.E. judge covers up to six (6) I.E. spots. Dual Interp. entries count as one I.E.

Please do not show up at the tournament without the required number of judges, because it will force us to drop your competitors from competition, beginning with your highest division teams. Also, judge no-shows which are not the result of late-running rounds will result in forfeitures, starting with your highest division teams.

Please note any judging limitations, in terms of divisions or events, on the registration form. However, you must have judges to cover your entries (e.g. each one or two Open Div. LD or CX teams requires a qualified judge for the same respective events and levels.)

FEES

Squad Fee $30.00 Debate teams (LD or CX) $20 I.E.'s $15.00

AWARDS

Individual Events: Top 10% in all events will receive trophies and top 20% will receive plaques. Debate: Top five speakers, and first, second, and third in all divisions will receive awards. Teams with an outstanding record, but not making semi-finals, as well as Quarterfinalists in Open LD & CX, will receive plaques.

TOC BIDS

We are pleased to announce that we have been granted both CX and LD bids to this yearâ^À^Ùs Tournament of Champions. Bids are at Semis in LD and at Finals in CX, for Open division teams. Accordingly, we will observe a closed Tab Room, and Open Division teams will compete in a combined sixth preliminary (consolation) round which will also be a hidden quarterfinals round for the teams advancing.

DEADLINES

Registration forms are due by WEDNESDAY, November 20th at 3:00 p.m. PST. Fees will be set at that time. Drops after that time will not be deducted from the entry fee. Second squads will be entered at that time on a space-available basis.
