Subject: [CX-L] Pepperdine Tournament Invitation Repost October 10-12

Hello,

Below is a re-post of the invitation to the Pepperdine Debate Tournament. In
addition to the JV and Varsity divisions of Policy/C-X debate, we are also
adding a one-day novice tournament for Saturday October 11. It will be 4
rounds with a brief awards ceremony following the last prelim. Entry fees
will be $40 per team. Also, please note we are adding JV and Varsity LD this
year, should netries warrant. If you have any additional questions or need
an invite mailed to you please contact me. We look forward to seeing you in
Malibu in October.

Greg Achten
Director of Forensics
Pepperdine University

Dear Colleagues,
Pepperdine University is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual
Pepperdine Invitational Debates to be hosted on our campus on October 10, 11
and 12. The tournament will offer six preliminary rounds of C-X debate as
well as appropriate elimination rounds in both varsity and JV divisions. For
the first time we will also offer both JV and Varsity divisions of Lincoln
Douglas. The preliminary rounds will be held on the main Malibu Campus with
the elimination rounds held at the Pepperdine University Law School (which
is also on the main campus and less than a ¼ mile from the prelim
buildings). The designated tournament hotel is the Warner Center Marriott in
Woodland Hills. I strongly urge you to stay at the Marriott. The Marriott is
an outstanding facility. I have managed to secure a tournament rate of $72
per night for up to 4 people per room, which is an exceptional rate for this
area and this hotel. The block expires a month before the tournament. You
can make reservations now by calling the Marriott directly at 818-887-4800
and asking for the reservation desk. The rooms are reserved as a block under
the name "High School Debate". You should make reservations as soon as
possible. If our block fills or you attempt to make reservations after the
block has closed, your options will be very limited and quite expensive, as
hotels in Malibu can fill up quickly.

We are pleased to be able to host a high school tournament at Pepperdine
this fall. Please be aware that Pepperdine is a SMALL school. We will take
entries on a first come basis, but we can only accommodate a limited number
of teams. Additional entries will be placed on a waiting list in the order
they arrive. Please enter early!

As one of the few debate only tournaments in the West we strongly encourage
your participation. The weather in Malibu in October should be quite nice.
Our schedule is such that there will be time Friday morning and in the
evenings to enjoy the beaches and other sites in and around the Malibu area.
We sincerely hope you are able to join us on our campus in October.

Sincerely,

Greg Achten Chris Losnegard Kylie

Tournament Information

Transportation Information: The closest airport is Los Angeles International
Airport, although Burbank is also relatively close as well. Obviously,
almost every major airline in the country flies to L.A. and I have found
ticket prices to be relatively reasonable to and from LAX. The hotel and
campus are approximately 45 minutes north of LAX. Unfortunately we cannot
provide local transportation, but there are a variety of rental car agencies
available at the airport. The Marriott is located just off the 101
Interstate. From LAX take the 405 freeway North to the 101 North/West. Exit
the 101 on Topanga Canyon North (which should be the 10th exit on the 101)
and go right. Proceed approximately a mile until you reach Oxnard. Turn
right. The hotel will be visible from Topanga Canyon Road.

The University is located at the Corner of Malibu Canyon Road and the
Pacific Coast Highway. To get to campus from the Hotel, take the 101
West/North towards Ventura. Exit on Malibu Canyon Road and turn left. The
campus is about 8 miles from the 101. The drive through the canyon is
beautiful, but a little curvy. Please be careful! Plan on the trip taking
half an hour. It should be less but traffic can be bad through the canyon
and on the 101. When you arrive on campus, stop at the information booth to
receive directions to the buildings on campus. The majority of the debates
will be on lower campus.

Campus Policies: The Pepperdine Campus is a smoke-free campus. There is no
smoking in ANY building on campus. PLEASE abide by this policy so that we
may continue to use these facilities in subsequent years. The Pepperdine
campus is also a drug and alcohol free campus.

Entry Information: Entries will be taken by phone at 310-506-4524 (note I
have voice mail), by fax at 310-456-3083, or by email at:
greg.achten@pepperdine.edu .I strongly encourage you to enter by email. When
entering please tell me the first and last names of your competitors and
division information (varsity or JV). If you enter by fax or email, please
include your email and phone number so I can respond to you with any
questions or comments. All fax and email entries will be confirmed by email.
The deadline for entries is noon on October 7th.

Tab Room: The tab room will be run by the Pepperdine coaching staff.

Fees: Fees will be $80 per CX team and $40 per LD entry. These fees include
breakfast on Saturday and Sunday as well as lunch on Saturday.

Judging: Each school is expected to provide one judge per two teams they
bring. Each judge will be obligated for one round beyond the elimination of
their team. We have some hired judges that we can provide, but not many.
Hired judges will be given on a first come, first served basis at a fee of
$80 per uncovered team. We are not trying to make money on hired judges. We
would much rather have your judges than your money. If you have extra judges
available from your school please let me know as we would probably like to
hire them. All judges are expected to render a decision in a timely fashion
and designate one, and only one, team as the winner of the debate.
