IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR 2003
1. Some divisions of the tournament will begin at 9:30 AM on
Saturday December 6th; all divisions will begin by 2:00 p.m.
2. Registration will be on Friday evening, December 5th, in the
Lexington Suite of the Ramada Inn (formerly the Harley Hotel) from 6:30
p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Please make every effort to register on Friday
evening.
Late registration will be in the Great Hall of the Student Center from
8:30 to 9:30 on Saturday morning, December 6th. DIRE EMERGENCIES ON SAT.
3. The tournament hotel will be the Ramada Inn (formerly the
Harley Hotel) with a flat rate of $65 + tax for 1-4 people. The Ramada
Inn
is holding rooms only until November 15th.
4. Reception for visiting coaches and judges will be held in the
Lexington Suite of the Ramada Inn (formerly the Harley Hotel) on Friday
from 6:00 to 12:00 midnight; and on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to
12:00
midnight.

Dear Colleague:
The University of Kentucky Student Forum cordially invites you to
the Ohio Valley Invitational to be held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday,
December 6th, 7th and 8th, 2003. The tournament will be limited to four
divisions of debate and is open to any high school in the country.
TOC Qualifier: The tournament is a TOC qualifier in two-person
policy at the quarter-finals level and Lincoln-Douglas at the semi-finals
level.
Debate Divisions: The tournament will include four divisions in
debate:
1. Varsity Policy Debate
2. Junior Varsity Policy Debate
3. Novice Policy Debate
4. Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Judges: If you provide the judge, the person can cover two teams
in policy or three Lincoln-Douglas debaters.
Hired Judges: A limited number of judges are available for hire.
Hired policy debate judges are $120 per team; $100 in LD.
Please Note: A
hired judge "cannot" cover two teams since we have to be concerned about
the cost of housing, transportation, etc. for hired judges.
A hired judge can cover two Lincoln-Douglas debaters for $100.
Please notify us of your request for hired judges as early as
possible. THERE WILL NOT BE ANY JUDGES FOR HIRE THE DAY OF THE
TOURNAMENT.
Schedule: DIVISIONS IN DEBATE WILL BEGIN AT 10:00 A.M. ON
SATURDAY. Final details of the schedule will be constructed after we see
the number of entries. The final schedule will be distributed at
registration. We will adhere to the following:
1. Varsity Debate: Varsity Debate will be held on Saturday,
Sunday and Monday. We will have six preliminary rounds in this division.
We will have either octas or double octas on Sunday if the number of
entries warrants. Elimination rounds in varsity debate will conclude on
Monday.
2. JV, Novice and Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Five preliminary
rounds
breaking to octas if the number of entries warrants. WE WILL MAKE EVERY
EFFORT TO COMPLETE THESE DIVISIONS ON SUNDAY, BUT CAN"T GUARANTEE.
Entry Deadlines: Entries "must" be in Lexington by Monday,
December 1. No refunds will be made after that date. All fees "must"
be paid by Monday, December 1. Please make all checks to "UK Student
Forum."
Registration: Registration will take place on Friday evening,
December 5th, in the Lexington Suite of the Ramada Inn (formerly the
Harley Hotel) from 6:30 p.m. until 12:00 midnight. Please make every
effort
to register on Friday evening.
Entries: We are placing no limit on the number of entries. If
it
later becomes necessary to limit entries, early registrants will receive
preference. If we run out of rooms, we will have to turn down entries,
thus its to your advantage to register early. Debaters must enter either
two-person or Lincoln-Douglas. You have the following options for entry:
1. You may enter by U.S. Mail, but remember your entry "must" be
in Lexington, not postmarked, by Monday, December 1. Please mail your
entries to:

2. You may enter by phone between 9:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.,
Monday

THANKSGIVING DAY OR THE FRIDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING. NO ONE WILL BE IN
THE
OFFICE TO TAKE YOUR ENTRY.

Entry Fees: The registration fee for two-person will be $60 per
team in all three divisions of two-person policy. The registration fee
for
Lincoln-Douglas will be $50 per entry. All fees "must" be paid by
Monday,
December 1. Please make all checks payable to "UK Student Forum."
PLEASE, DO NOT TELL US YOU WILL MAIL THE CHECK LATER. THERE WILL BE "NO
EXCEPTIONS."
We cannot provide refunds after Monday, December 1. If you drop
entries after that date, you must still pay the entry fees.
Location: All debates will be held on the University of Kentucky
campus with the possibility that we might hold one of the smaller
divisions
at the hotel if rooms are not available on campus.
Topics: The national topic will be used for both policy and
Lincoln-Douglas debates.
Tournament Hotel: The tournament hotel will be the Ramada Inn
(formerly the Harley Hotel) at 2143 North Broadway, Lexington, Kentucky,
40505. The phone number is 859-299-1261 and please ask for the Sales
Department. Special tournament rate, $65+tax for 1-4 people. Please be
sure and ask for the block of rooms reserved for the UK Debate
Tournament.
