Subject: LEXINGTON WINTER TOURNAMENT

LEXINGTON DEBATE
251 Waltham Street
Lexington, Massachusetts 02421

DEBATERS, TEACHERS, COACHES:

Please attend Lexington's annual winter tournament, to be held Friday through
Sunday, January 16 through 18, 2004, at Lexington High School. Once again,we
will provide high quality competition, efficient administration, and the best
possible judging. We are a TOC qualifier at quarterfinals in both policy and
Lincoln-Douglas debate. Teams from 29 states and the Federal City have
attended our tournament; we think you should do it, too.

RESOLUTIONS: In policy, the national high school resolution; in
Lincoln-Douglas, the NFL January-February resolution, to be announced about
December 1 by the NFL national office.

FORMAT: Four divisions (novice and open policy, novice and open LD). In both
open divisions, we will offer six preliminary and four or five elimination
rounds. Novice divisions will offer five preliminary rounds and an appropriate
number of elimination rounds. Both will conclude on Saturday, and ballots and
trophies are distributed at Saturday's awards assembly.

ELIGIBILITY: A novice at this tournament is a debater who has not competed
in debate prior to September 1, 2003. People who went to institute last summer
are not eligible in this division.

ENTRY LIMITS: Initially, five varsity teams, five Lincoln-Douglas debaters,
and three novice teams per school. Extra entries will go on a waiting list,
But please note that our first priority is to grant additional varsity
entries.

JUDGES: We hope schools will make every effort to cover their entries with
qualified judges. One judge must be supplied for every four students or
fraction thereof, regardless of division. Advanced, experienced debaters
(third or fourth year strongly preferred) may judge in the novice divisions.
Very qualified judges indeed are expected in the varsity
divisions. For hired judging, see below.

HOUSING: Available for Friday and Saturday night *for competing students and
student judges in the novice division*. We will accept the first 250 requests.
We reserve the right to close housing when we have received 250 requests, so
early response is very important. Please understand that meeting the *entry*
deadline does not guarantee that housing is available. *Please return the
enclosed form by surface mail or email, or fax it to 781 861 2440.* Students
should bring sleeping bags. Thursday and Sunday night housing is available
only if requested by December 20.

Coaches and other adults (including college age persons) may secure housing at
one of our fine local hostelries. This year the Sheraton Lexngton (781 862
8700) is offering a special rate of $79 per room. To get this rate, call the
hotel and ask for the ^ÓMartin Luther King Debate Weekend.^Ô The block is held
only until December 17. This is the nicest hotel in Lexington, although it is
farther from the school than some other options. Other options include the
somewhat controversial Battle Green Inn (781 862 6100), in the heart of
Lexington Center, walking distance from the high school. There^Ò s also the
Holiday Inn-Express (formerly the TraveLodge, formerly the Days Inn, formerly
the Catch Penny,781 861 0850) and many options in nearby Waltham and
Burlington.

FOOD: Dinner is served on Friday night; lunch is served on Saturday. This
cost is included in your entry fees.

FEES: $10 school fee
		$70 per varsity unit
		$70 per novice unit
		$35 per Lincoln-Douglas debater
		$160 per hired judge

We regret that increases in our custodial costs force an increase in fees.

FEES ARE FIXED AT 10 pm Sunday, January 11. Nuisance taxes, in addition to
original charges, are assessed for late changes according to the following
schedule:

$15 per change from Wednesday 10 pm to Friday 7 am
$25 per change from Friday 7 am to registration
$35 per change at the registration table

These are the famous Michael H. Prosser Nuisance Taxes. Accepting our
invitation accepts these rules.

HOW TO REGISTER: We will close the tournament hwen it is full. Email
entries are strongly preferred -- send them to les_phillips98@yahoo.com or
lynnecoyne@aol.com. You can also fax your entry to 781 861 2440. We cannot
accept telephone registrations; phone us only for late changes: 781 861 2320
x2150 or 617 876 6724 (Phillips home, before 10 pm). We cannot guarantee any
entries received after January 4. YOU MUST MAKE A CONFIRMATION CALL TO 781 861
2320 x2150 ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, BETWEEN 230 AND 600 PM. If you will be in
transit, call earlier!

In person registration runs from 1230 to 230 pm on Friday, January 17, with an
assembly at 300 pm.

We look forward to welcoming you to scenic, historic Lexington in mid-January.

DIRECTIONS TO LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Route 128/Interstate 95 is the best approach from any direction. Exit 30 is
the second Lexington exit, regardless of the direction you are coming from;
it is marked ROUTE 2A. Follow ROUTE 2A EAST into Lexington. Travel for a
little more than a mile until you reach the first FULL traffic light; there is
a
Dunkin' Donuts on this corner. Then turn left onto WALTHAM STREET; pass
through another traffic light; Lexington High School is immediately on your
left.

Lexington is twelve miles from Boston's Logan International Airport.
Southwest Airlines fly into Providence and Manchester (NH) airports -- they are
each about 75 minutes' drive from Lexington, and the fares are very low. We
are also 20 minutes' drive from a suburban Amtrak station. Contact us for
further details.
