Subject: Stanford Invitational Feb 6 - 8 2004

Dear Forensics Coach:

The Stanford Speaking and Debating Society is pleased to invite your school to attend the eighteenth annual Stanford National Invitational, which will be held on Friday through Sunday, February 6, 7 and 8, 2004. Last year's Stanford Invitational attracted nearly 200 entrants in both policy debate and LD, and well more than 500 IE / congress participants, making it one of the largest tournaments in the country.

We were very pleased with the fact that on both Friday and Saturday evenings last year the tournament ended relatively early. This was after many years of schedule changes designed to minimize the lateness of the tournament caused by our large campus and 2 and 1/3 day schedule, and the considerate suggestions of many coaches. We do anticipate that Sunday evening the tournament will end very late (roughly midnight) for the last few teams in varsity policy and varsity LD.

Competition will be offered in Policy Debate, National Topic Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Parliamentary Debate, Student Congress and eight individual events, with Open division only for congress, IE^Òs, and Parli, and JV and Varsity for debate ^Ö both policy and LD. We will be using the NFL topic for policy debate, and the January / February topic (available from the NFL national office December 1) in LD. The tournament hotel is the Marriott of Santa Clara at $89 per room per night, up to four per room (often $129 even on a weekend rate; $250 to $300 during the week!). This rate is guaranteed for Friday and Saturday nights only, but should be available on a limited basis (and if booked promptly) for early arrivals and stay-over. Please do stay at the tournament hotel if you can, as this assists the tournament in being able to book rooms for tournament functions, such as the IE prelims, at a reasonable rate. Please identify yourself as with ^ÓStanford Debate.^Ô

Please note that Individual Events on Saturday will be held at the Marriott of Santa Clara. Entry this year will ONLY be accepted through the ^Ójoyoftournaments.com^Ô website. It is easy to use, and should help improve that accuracy of entry information for the tournament. Entries need to be made on the ^Ójoyoftournaments.com^Ô website no later than Friday, January 23, although of course once the tournament is full no additional entries will be accepted. Any and all changes to your tournament entry must be completed by the Friday, January 23 deadline. Questions about the tournament can be addressed to us at our office at (650) 723-9086 or by e-mail at stanforddebate@hotmail.com. All entry is on a rolling admissions basis, and once the tournament is full additional entries will not be permitted. E-mail us if you need to request entries above and beyond the tournament entry limits, and as always we will do our best to accommodate you, particularly for schools who have been longstanding attendees of the tournament. Please note that entries without full coach contact information will be accepted AFTER those which are submitted with full contact info.

Please feel free to copy this entry packet for any school which would like a copy but has not received one from us, and to distribute copies of this invitation to interested parties. Questions about the year 2004 Stanford Invitational should be directed to tournament director Mr. Matthew Fraser at (510) 548-4800, or by calling the Stanford Debate Office at (650) 723-9086. Mr. Fraser may be reached by e-mail at mfraser@educationunlimited.com

Please, please, please take care of your tournament registration right away, and please book your hotel right away. This will insure a pleasant and trouble free tournament for everyone, and allow us to host you in the way you deserve!
