5th ANNUAL HARKER INVITATIONAL
Dear Colleagues,
On Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26, <?xml:namespace
prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Harker
High School will host the 5th Annual Harker Invitational – a
national debate tournament that offers 6 preliminary rounds and
corresponding elimination rounds in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas and Varsity
Policy divisions. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
We will also offer one division of Parliamentary Debate that features 6
preliminary rounds and corresponding elimination rounds.
This year’s topic area for Parliamentary Debate will be
“Presidential Elections.”
Harker High School is located in San Jose, California, just 10 minutes
from the nearby San Jose International Airport and 35 minutes from San
Francisco International. We strive to offer a very competitive tournament
with outstanding judges from local area universities. We will again
provide complimentary breakfast and lunch, with our customary concession
stand offering a variety of snacks, including Starbucks bottled
frappuchinos, etc. We will also recognize the top ten speakers in LD and
Policy Debate, provide elimination round trophies, and award sweepstakes
(1st, 2nd, and 3rd).
We are pleased to offer the TownePlace Suites by Marriott (within walking
distance to our campus) as our tournament hotel. The hotel has
established a block of rooms at a pre-negotiated rate of $69 per night
(Friday and Saturday). Rooms include full kitchens, high- speed Internet
access, cable television, ironing boards, hair dryers, and couches that

We will again offer limited student housing on a first-come, first-served

Registration for the tournament will be provided on-line beginning July
26 at www.joyoftournaments.com/ca/harker. Click on the Harker Tournament
to access registration. Judges will be expected to fill out judging
philosophy forms and submit them by Wednesday, September 22, to Tim
Mahoney at timm@harker.org. We expect to hand these out to all schools at
registration.
We are pleased to have Sue Peterson and Alex Iftimie return as tab room
directors this year along with an exceptional judging pool. Our
tournament is growing in its quality of competition, excellent judging,
and on-time performance. We hope you will join us on the West Coast this
fall as we strive to do everything we can to accommodate you and your
students.
