2004 East Grand Rapids
Debate Tournament
October 29th-31st, 2004

You are cordially invited to East Grand Rapids^Ò someteenth annual debate
tournament. East Grand Rapids will provide competition in the Varsity and
Novice divisions of Cross Examination debate on the 2004 topic - Resolved: That
the United States federal government should establish a foreign policy
substantially increasing its support of United Nations peacekeeping operations.

THE TOURNAMENT:
There is no entry deadline or entry limit. We will accept entries until we are
full. We were full 2 weeks before the tournament last year, although most teams
were allowed in off the wait list. Entry MUST be by Email to
egrdebate@yahoo.com. Faxed and mailed entries have been known to get lost in
the EGR system. Please DO NOT attempt to enter by phone, notes at tournaments
or with students. Confirmations will be returned to all entrants with final
information, transportation directions and instructions for Final Confirmation.

Final Confirmation of your entry must be completed by Wednesday evening,
October 27th, by 8:00 PM. This must include full names of debaters, judge
philosophies and contact information. Confirm by email at egrdebate@yahoo.com.
We will be using the Mutual Judge Preference option this year for judge
placement. This means that the tournament must have your judges names by
Tuesday, the 26th, in order to send out MPJ Forms. We will attempt to send
these out by Tuesday night, and will have them due by Thursday afternoon. Last
minute judge changes may force us to hold off using MPJ until power matched
rounds. There is no MPJ in Novice.

In exchange for appropriate registration fees, packets will be distributed on
Friday, October 29th, from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM in front of the cafeteria of
the High School

East Grand Rapids has been a Tournament of Champions qualifier at the
Quarterfinals level.

The Varsity Division will consist of six preliminary debates: three rounds on
Friday and three on Saturday. Rounds one and two will be randomly paired, with
the remainder being High Low within brackets. Ties will be broken on H/L
Points, Opponents Wins, DH/L Points, and then Total Points. We will never lag
pair rounds. We will fill out the full Double Octofinal round, as long as
enough teams have winning records. We will not flip on stage for elims.
Quarterfinals through Finals will be held Sunday Morning at the Grand Rapids
Hilton

The Novice Division will be TWO PERSON, SWITCH SIDES. There will be five
preliminary rounds. The first two will be randomly paired with the remainder
paired appropriately. We will attempt to clear to Octofinals, given sufficient
numbers. Novice rounds are held next door, at EGR Middle School, which is a
very short walk, even with evidence.

All Judges will be required to fill out a Judge Philosophy Sheet. A possible
format is included, but feel free to make your own. Please have all judges
complete this before the tournament and send the sheet by Email to
egrdebate@yahoo.com by Wednesday, October 27th. We will distribute these
philosophy sheets to all at the tournament, and will send them out to teams in
advance, and so getting the philosophies in advance of the tournament and in
electronic form is necessary.

FEES:
Fees for the tournament are $70 per two person Varsity team, $40 per two person
Novice Team. Boxed lunches on Saturday are included in the registration fee. On
Friday, dinner will be sold for minimal cost. In Either division, one judge is
required for every one or two teams. Half of six is four. All judges are
committed one round beyond their school^Òs elimination. A limited number of
hired judges will be available for $150 each. Please contact us ASAP if you
need hired judges. Drops after Monday, October 25th will still be charged entry
fees.

LODGING:
The Grand Rapids Hilton Inn, 4747 28th Street SE, once again will be the
official tournament hotel, providing rooms at a special rate of $75 for one to
four persons. The cutoff date for the room block is October 11th, and there is
another event occurring at the hotel that weekend, so Early Reservations are
helpful in securing double double rooms. The Hotel asks that schools send
Rooming Lists to assist in Registration. The Hotel has a swimming pool,
exercise room, and sauna. It is located convenient to fast food, several
quality Debate-Schedule-Friendly restaurants and is a 10-15 minute drive from
the school. For reservations call (616) 957-0100 and ask for Judith Young,
Head of Group Sales. Tell her that you are with the EGR Debate Tournament.
