Hello,
For more information visit our website: www.michigandebate.com
The NEW 2004 University of Michigan High School Debate Tournament
Friday, November 5 â^À^Ó Sunday, November 7, 2004
Now a Quarter-Final bid to the Tournament of Champions
On behalf of The Michigan Debate Team, we are pleased to invite you to the 9th Annual University of Michigan debate tournament held on the Central Campus of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor on Friday, Saturday and Sunday November 5-7, 2004.
The tournament will provide competition in the Varsity and Novice divisions of 2004/2005 Peacekeeping Cross Examination topic. We are pleased to announce that the tournament is now certified as a TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS QUALIFIER IN THE QUARTER-FINALS FOR POLICY DEBATE IN THE VARSITY DIVISION.
HOW TO REGISTER
Teams must register by Monday, November 1st, space permitting. We will continue to accept teams up to that that date providing we have rooms. If we have filled up by the time you register we will have a waiting list available. Registration must be by mail, phone, fax, or e-mail (jbhoe@umich.edu). Email is greatly preferred, and will speed up confirmation of your entries. Please do not attempt to register by phone or with any members of the Michigan Debate team other than the Director of Debate Josh Hoe or the Assistant Director of Debate Aaron Kall. Last year we reached capacity in all divisions and had to turn several entrants away, particularly those who registered â^À^Üinformally,â^À^Ý so please enter early to assure your teams a spot at the tournament. Confirmations will be returned to all registrants with final information, transportation directions and instructions for Final Confirmation.
Final registration will be held from 10:00am â^À^Ó 12:00pm at the Hampton Inn on Friday, November 7th.. Tournament fees are due no later than this time. You will receive your tournament packets at registration. We will accept credit card payments over the phone up until the day of registration.
If you need a more easily printed version of this invitation please send a request to jbhoe@unich.edu and Josh will include an attached copy in his reply for easy printing.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
**This schedule is subject to change based on entries**
The varsity division will consist of six preliminary debates: three rounds on Friday and three on Saturday plus the first elimination debate. We plan to break the top 32 teams with a record of 4 wins or better. If our numbers stay constant, we will be breaking to a full double octa-final round. If there are insufficient numbers to fill 32 debates, we will proceed with a partial double octa-final round. This decision will be made by the Director prior to the start of the tournament. All preliminary and elimination rounds will be held on the Central Campus.
The novice division will also consist of six preliminary rounds with two on Friday and four on Saturday. Novice is currently scheduled to clear to semi-final rounds.
Each team entered has a 3 round prelim judging obligation. All Judges are obligated for the first elimination round. Judges are further obligated to judge one round after the elimination of their last team. Schools whose judges or replacement judges do not meet their obligations can have their teams prevented from competing.
TOURNAMENT FEES
Fees for the tournament are $80 per team. A limited number of hired judges will be available at $100.00 per uncovered team. In other words a full judge would cost $200.00 and cover Two Teams.
LODGING
The tournament hotel is the Hampton Inn Ann Arbor South (which is a change for the better from previous years). If you make your reservation by October 21, 2004 the rate will be $71.00 per night for a quad. This is a great rate for a hotel located close to campus (last years rate was $79.00). The cutoff date for the room blocks is October 21, 2004. . Donâ^À^Ùt worry about food -- there are plenty of restaurants located near the two hotels, including lots of fast food joints and a few â^À^Ülate nightâ^À^Ý spots like Benniganâ^À^Ùs and Damonâ^À^Ùs.
