Hello.
Here are just the Basics. Write me and we'll mail/fax you the full
invitation:
The Groves Debate Team cordially invites you to attend the 9th Annual Groves
High School Debate Invitational, to be held at Groves High School and
Berkshire Middle School on Friday, November 14 and Saturday, November 15,
1997. Groves is located in Beverly Hills Michigan (A suburb of Detroit).
Policy Debate:
Topic: well if you don't know by now. . ..
Format
Varsity (2 Person): 5 prelims (three power matched) breaking to octafinals
JV (2 person) : 5 prelims (three power matched) breaking to quarterfinal
or
octafinals
Novice (4 person :one aff and one neg team per novice unit): 5 prelims
(three
power matched)breaking to octafinals
All three division compete on both Friday and Saturday.
Varsity Debate will be held at Berkshire Middle School (about 3/4 miles away
from Groves).
Varsity debate ONLY will be using Tab Room on the Mac program.
Judges:
One qualified judge for ever two person team, or fraction thereof. Do not
assign one half judge to both varsity and JV divisions, as these divisions
are being held in two different buildings.
In Novice, one qualified judge for each 4 person unit.
Judges are expected to be available to judge one round past their own team's
elimination in all three divisions.
Rules: We are expecting schools from several different states to participate.
Accordingly the tournament will not enforce any particular set of rules.
Judges, of course, may enforce certain rules and guidelines in individual
debate rounds; we ask only that judges announce their preferences to the
debaters prior to the beginning of the round.
Rebuttals in all three divisions will be five minutes. Prep time is seven.
Constructives are eight.
Fees: $35 for each 2 person V/JV team. $35 for each novice 4 person unit.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate:
Topic: Resolved: An Adolescent's right to privacy ought to be valued above a
parent's Conflicting right to know (the NFL Topic for November/December 1997)
Fees: $12 per student
Format: One judge for every two L-D debaters.

Lodging: There are three tournament hotels.
The Holiday Inn-Southfield - $60 each room plus tax
The Red Roof Inn, $54 plus tax
The Double Tree Suites, $79 per room (but it can hold 6 instead of 4 people)
