To the Director of Forensics:
Spring, 1862. Warm, wet weather arrived early in the Deep South. Peach
orchards in South-Central Tennessee, Northwest Alanama and North East
Mississippi blazed with color. Shortly thereafter the thunder of cannon
and the horrific cries of the dead and dying shattered the serenity
along the Tennessee River. Two massive armies came to blows some 40
miles to the northwest of Florence near a country church named Shiloh in
what would be one of the deadliest battles of the War Between the
States.
On the 136th anniversary of that battle, another confrontation at
Florence looms in the spring. This time, however, the conflict will be
an intellectual, academic encounter. The T. B. LARIMORE FORENSIC SOCIETY
of Mars Hill is pleased to invite your cx debate teams to the FINAL TOC
QUALIFIER for 1998--the BLUE-GRAY CLASSIC to be held March 6-7, 1998 on
the 125-year-old campus of Mars Hill in Florence, AL.
Nationally-recognized high school debating teams will engage in five
preliminary rounds of competition to be followed by up to four
elimination rounds. The 1998 BLUE-GRAY CLASSIC IS A SEMI-FINAL QUALIFIER
for the 25th Anniversary Tournament of Champions at the University of
Kentucky.
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION:
DATE: March 6-7, 1998 (beginning at 3:30 p.m. on March 6)
LOCATION: Mars Hill
698 Cox Creek Parkway
Florence, AL 35630
DEADLINE: Application must be received PRIOR TO 8:00 a.m. on
February 25, 1998.
SCHEDULE: Five prelims with elims starting at octafinals
AWARDS: *BLUE-GRAY CLASSIC momentos for each coach and
debater.
*Unique BLUE-GRAY trophies for all teams reaching
eliminations
*Speaker Awards for top speakers.
FEES: $80. per two-person team includes all of the above
PLUS
*an evening meal for coaches, judges and debaters on
Friday
*an Awards Brunch on Saturday
JUDGING: Each school is required to furnish one qualified
critic judge for each four debaters. A LIMITED NUMBER
of judges will be available for hire per the
following stipulations:
*Judges will be hired on a first-come, first-served
basis.
*Judging fees will be $75. for each uncovered
two-person team.
NOTE: We hope to assemble a pool of qualified college
coaches and debaters to supplement our judging
pool.
