Coaches, Debaters, Students,
Needham High School and Hampshire Regional High School would like to
invite you to attend the first annual Spring Fling Tournament to be
contested on March 7th and 8th, 1998.  We will be hosting two days of
debate competition with an eye toward readying teams for upcoming state
and national qualifiers.  We will be pleased to offer 3 divisions of
Policy Debate, Novice, J-V, and Varsity, two divisions of
Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Novice and Open. We will also offer competition
in Student Congress. 

Registration will begin at Needham High School at 8 o'clock and run
until 8:45AM on Saturday.  Competition will begin by 9:30 AM following a
brief opening meeting.  We intend to contest all the preliminary rounds
of competition by Saturday evening, and start elimination rounds early
(9 AM) on Sunday morning.  Specifically, we will have 3 sessions of
Congress on Saturday, and 1 on Sunday.  If numbers warrant it, we will
host a final Super Session in Congress on Sunday.  Housing will be
available for schools traveling significant distances for Friday and
Saturday night.  Dinner will be provided on Saturday night, and food
will be sold all day Saturday and Sunday.  We have arranged for a
special tournament hotel rate of $69 per night for coaches and any
competitors who wish to stay at the Needham Sheraton, less than 2 miles
away from the High School.  The school is accessible via public
transportation from Boston.    Shuttle services from the Hotel to the
tournament can be arranged.

We will be using the official NFL resolutions in both LD and Policy,
specifically we will be debating the March-April topic in LD, Resolved:
Civil Disobedience is justified in a democracy.  We will follow NFL
Rules for timing in all debate divisions, and Parlimentary Procedure in
Student Congress.

Entry limits:
We reserve the right to limit school entries if the need arises.
We expect:	1 Judge per 2 policy teams or fraction there of.
	1 Judge per 4 LD Debaters or fraction there of.
	1 Judge per 6 Student Congress Representatives or fraction there
of.

Awards:
Elimination rounds in all debate events will be determined based on the
number of entries. We will be giving out speaker awards in Policy, and
will recognize the appropriate number of competitors in each event as
entries warrant it.

Costs:
Simple formula $17 per person: $17 per LDer, $17 per
Senator/Representative, $34 Per Policy Team.  Dinner Saturday is
included in this cost.
Hired Judges: $100 per hired judge
Penalty for bringing insufficient judges: $50 per insufficiency (we
reserve the right to restrict entries if judges are not provided for.)
 
Pertinent Dates:
Requests for housing should be submitted by February 28, 1998
Congress bills will be accepted up until February 25, 1998
Registrations due by March 2, 1998.  Fees are frozen as of this date
A Nuisance fee will be assessed at $10 per changes, after March 3, 1998

rate of $69 per night.  Reservations received after Feb 20th may not get

From Logan airport:
Take the Sumner Tunnel to Route 90 West (Mass Turnpike).  Take the Mass
Pike to Exit 14, Route 128.  Follow Route 128 South to Exit 19B.  This
Is Highland Ave. Needham.  Off the exit, pass a Ford Dealership.  Go
through the first set of lights, take a left at the next set of lights
onto Webster St. (there is a Fleet Bank on the corner).  Follow Webster
about a mile.  See the High School on your right.  Pass it.  Take your
next right on to  Kingsbury Street.  From Kingsbury, take your first
rate up the schools drive way.  There is ample parking behind the gym
past the circle in front of the school.

From The North:
Find your way to Route95
