Dear Colleague:
The University of Kentucky Student Forum for this year is combining the
annual Princeton High School (Cincinnati) Tournament and the traditional
Ohio Valley Invitational to be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
December 5th, 6th and 7th, l997. The tournament will be limited to four
divisions of debate and is open to any high school in the country.
TOC Qualifier: The tournament is a TOC qualifier in two-person policy at
the quarter-finals level and Lincoln-Douglas at the semi-finals level.
Debate Divisions: The tournament will include four divisions in debate:
1. Varsity Policy Debate
2. Junior Varsity Policy Debate
3. Novice Policy Debate
4. Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Judges: If you provide the judge, the person can cover two
teams in policy or three Lincoln-Douglas debaters.
Hired Judges: A limited number of judges are available for hire.
Hired policy debate judges are $100 per team. Please Note: A hired
judge ^Ócannot^Ô cover two teams since we have to be concerned about the
cost of housing, transportation, etc. for hired judges.
A hired judge can cover two Lincoln-Douglas debaters for $100.
Please notify us of your request for hired judges as early as possible.
THERE WILL NOT BE ANY JUDGES FOR HIRE THE DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT.
Schedule: ALL DIVISIONS IN DEBATE WILL BEGIN AT 4:00 P.M., ON FRIDAY.
Final details of the schedule will be constructed after we see the number
of entries. The final schedule will be distributed at registration. We
will adhere to the following:
1. Varsity Debate: Varsity Debate will be held on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. We will have six preliminary rounds in this division. We will
have double octas on Saturday if the number of entries warrants.
Elimination rounds in varsity debate will conclude on Sunday.
2. JV, Novice and Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Five preliminary rounds
breaking to octas if the number of entries warrants.
Entry Deadlines: Entries ^Ómust^Ô be in Lexington by Monday, December 1st.
No refunds will be made after that date. All fees ^Ómust^Ô be paid by
Monday, December 1st.

Registration: Registration will take place in the Great Hall of the
Student Center on Friday, December 5th, between 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m..
Entries: We are placing no limit on the number of entries. If it later
becomes necessary to limit entries, early registrants will receive
preference. If we run out of rooms, we will have to turn down entries,
thus its to your advantage to register early. Debaters must enter either
two-person or Lincoln-Douglas. You have the following options for entry:
1. You may enter by U.S. Mail, but remember your entry must be in
Lexington, not postmarked, by Monday, December 1st. Please mail your
entries to:

2. You may enter by phone between 9:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m., Monday
through Friday by calling 606-257-6523. DO NOT PHONE IN AN ENTRY ON
THANKSGIVING DAY OR THE FRIDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING. NO ONE WILL BE IN THE
OFFICE TO TAKE YOUR ENTRY.
3. You may fax your entry to Linda Barker at 606-323-1995.
4. You may e-mail your entry through Monday, December 1st, to Linda
Barker at llbark0@pop.uky.edu; or J.W. Patterson at jwpatt00@pop.uky.edu.
Entry Fees: The registration fee for two-person will be $50 per team in
all three divisions of two-person policy. The registration fee for
Lincoln-Douglas will be $30 per entry. All fees ^Ómust^Ô be paid by Monday,
December 1st. Please make all checks payable to ^ÓUK Student Forum.^Ô
PLEASE, DO NOT TELL US YOU WILL MAIL THE CHECK LATER. THERE WILL BE ^ÓNO
EXCEPTIONS.^Ô
We cannot provide refunds after Monday, December 1st. If you drop entries
after that date, you must still pay the entry fees.
Location: All debates will be held on the University of Kentucky campus
with the possibility that we might hold one of the smaller divisions at the
hotel if rooms are not available on campus.
Topics: The national topic will be used for both policy and
Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Tournament Hotel: The tournament hotel will be the Continental Inn at
801 NE New Circle Road, Lexington, Kentucky, 40505. The phone number is
606-299-5281 and please ask for the Sales Department. Special tournament
rate, $48 plus tax for 1-4 people. Please be sure and ask for the block
of rooms reserved for the UK Debate Tournament.
If you Arrive on Thursday: If you arrive on Thursday evening and wish to
visit, I will be in Room 136-138 of the Continental Inn and will be happy
to receive coaches and guest judges.
Awards: Championship awards will be given to teams in both divisions as
well as to the top speakers in policy debate.
