Dear Director of Forensics:
The University of Texas Forensics Union invites you and your students to
attend the Longhorn Classic Tournament to be held on the campus of the
University of Texas at Austin on December 5-6, 1997.
In keeping with our commitment to a well-rounded forensics education, we
will offer students the opportunity to compete in a variety of events,
including both championship and novice cross-examination debate,
Lincoln-Douglas, Duet Acting, and all TFA individual events, plus
impromptu, poetry and prose.
There will be five preliminary rounds in all debating divisions, breaking
to octos if warranted by size. Individual events will feature two flighted
patterns and two preliminary rounds, followed by semi-finals and finals,
where warranted.

EVENTS
Contestants may enter two events from section A, but only one division of
extemp.
Section A: HI, DI, FX, DX, OO, IMP
Contestants may enter one event in CCX, NCX, LD, or two from Duet Acting,
poetry, and prose.
Section B: CCX, NCX, LD, DUET, PR, PO
ENTRY GUIDELINES
All TFA rules will be followed. See page six of this invitation for TFA
rules and debate topics This is a TFA State Qualifier for member schools.
Schools are allowed to enter no more than FIVE debate teams divided between
CCX and NCX, with no more than two being NCX. No more than Five LD
entries. Individual events are unlimited until we reach capacity.
Waiting list: If you wish to enter additional teams, we will put
additional them on a waiting list and let you know if we will accept them
by December 1st.
How to enter: you may fax your entries to Peter Pober or Joel Rollins at
512-471-3504. Because of holiday and university delivery problems, we
cannot accept mailed entries. Please enter as soon as possible to ensure
your entry!!!!
Confirmation Letters will be sent immediately upon receipt of your entry.
If you do not receive one within five days, please call 512-471-1918 or
512-471-1957.
FEES: All entries should be received no later than Wednesday November
26th. All fees are assessed the day the entry is received. If your entire
entry is dropped, you are responsible for all the fees. All changes and
drops made after December 2nd will incur a $20 drop fee plus the entry
fee for CX and LD debate, and a $10 drop fee for Individual Events and Duet
Acting. Drops made after 5:00 PM Thursday December 4th will incur the
entry fee plus a $50 drop fee for CX and LD and $25 for IE and Duet.
Unreported drops or no shows will be billed to the school.

CX & LINCOLN DOUGLAS DEBATE
CX Divisions: There will be championship and novice cross-ex divisions.
Only debaters in their first year of competition may enter novice division.
We will abide by 8-3-5 (8 minute prep) time limits. In the five
preliminary rounds, each team will debate affirmative and negative at least
two times (assuming you don't receive a BYE). Round five will be flip for
sides. Criteria for qualifying for the elimination rounds are (1) win-loss
record, (2) total speaker points (3) adjusted speaker points..
Lincoln-Douglas: 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 time limits will be used.
Entries: Limit on number of entries is five per school in CX, with a
maximum of two in NCX. Limit of five per school in LD. See above
information regarding waiting list. We will not break brackets
Judging: each school is expected to provide one qualified judge for each
two debate teams. Schools unable to provide judges may hire a limited
number of Texas judges at the rate of $50 for each uncovered team. All
collected judge fees will go to paying judges. All judges will be
committed through the octafinal debate and one round after his/her team's
elimination.
INDIVIDUAL EVENTS AND DUET ACTING
Entries: no student may enter more than two individual events per pattern
and only one division of extemp.
Rounds: there will be two preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and finals in
each of the events: TFA descriptions and rules apply to all individual
events.
No presentation should be composed of material used in competition prior to
the current school year. As well, no student may use a piece or cutting in
more than one event:
Judging: Any school entered in individual events must provide a judge for
every 15 individual event or Duet Acting slots. Each uncovered entry will
be assessed an additional $8 fee.
Awards:
All finalists in each of the individual events will receive awards. All
debating teams reaching the elimination rounds will receive awards. Top
speaker awards in debating will also be given. Sweepstakes will be
calculated on the top two entries per event per school.
Registration begins at 1:00 PM Friday, December 5, at the UTC (University
Teaching Center).
LODGING
The Ramada Inn Limited will be our host hotel for the tournament. The
hotel is located at 5526 North IH 35. Please reference UT Speech when
calling in your reservation. A large block of rooms has been reserved
until November 25th The room rate is $49 plus appropriate tax. Believe
me, you will not find a better rate in the city. Call them at

graduation weekend.

General Information
^Å An adult supervisor for each school must be in attendance at all times.
^Å School on Friday lasts until 3:00 PM. Parking will be tight, if not
preposterous. Please have your bus drivers drop your students off in front
of the UTC and then park.
^Å No smoking in any UT building.
^Å Judges who fail to pick up assigned ballots will render their students
ineligible for elimination rounds.
^Å Any student more than 15 minutes late to a round will be forfeited
