Subject: Isidore Newman Invitational
Isidore Newman School is pleased to invite you to our twenty-first
annual tournament on December 11-13, 1998.
We will do our best to uphold the traditions of the tournament with
respect to the quality of competition and an exciting environment in
which to compete. There are three notable changes over the past years in
the tournament format. First, the days of four back-to-back rounds of
debate with the lag powering of rounds three and four are over. All
rounds of debate after round 2 will be power matched based on record.
The first round of IE's will take place Friday evening between rounds
two and three of debate. Second, we will have a middle school/junior
high speech tournament on Saturday only. Third, more than four debate
entries will be accepted provided that space permits and that school
provide qualified judging for their additional entries. A wait list
will be started for extra spaces, and schools will be contacted as space
becomes available.
Also note that we are once again a qualifying tournament for the
University of Kentucky's National Tournament of Champions for the policy
teams that reach the quarterfinals and Lincoln Douglas debaters that
reach the semi-finals.
Events:
Our high school events include Varsity LD Debate, Varsity Policy Debate,
Senior Mixed Extemp, Junior Mixed Extemp, Declamation, Original Oratory,
Senior Prose/Poetry, Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp, Duo Reading, and
Student Congress.
**Note that individuals can cross enter in debate and individual events.
LD will use the 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 format with 3 minutes of prep time. The
Nov/Dec NFL topic will be used. (Capitol Punishment)
Policy will use the 8-3-5 format with 7 minutes of prep time. The
National high school topic will be used. (Russia)
Judging:
LD Debate requires one judge for every three LDers. A second judge is
necessary for four debaters. The hired judge fee is $100.
Policy Debate requires one judge for every two teams of fraction
thereof. In you are entering three or four teams, you must bring at
least one judge. The hired judge fee is $100.
Deadlines:
Fees will be assessed and are final upon receipt of entry. Entries are
due Thursday December 3, but spaces typically fill long before that, so
it is recommended that they be in by Thanksgiving. Payment would be
appreciated with the entry, but otherwise, is due at Registration.
