Dear Coach:

The La Cueva High School Speech and Debate Team is pleased to invite you
to our annual Cave Classic scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January
22-23, 1999.

We will be offering both Novice and Senior categories of Policy Debate
and Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Because the University of Kentucky has named
the Cave Classic a TOC Qualifier in the Final Round, a separate schedule
will exist for Senior Lincoln Douglas. Individual events will include
Foreign and Domestic Extemp, Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation,
Humorous and Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interp, Expository, and an
original La Cueva event-CIDNI in two divisions, senior and junior. We
will continue to feature Student Congress and two events for middle
school/junior high participation; Junior CIDNI, Storytelling and
Declamation. In addition, NFL qualified student judges may register to
judge mid school events. These judges, however do not relieve schools of
judge obligations. Three preliminary rounds of will be offered in each
of the individual events, breaking to semis (when numbers warrant) and
finals. After four preliminary rounds of debate - In Policy Debate and
in Novice Lincoln-Douglas (the first two being randomly preset and the
second two powered off all preceding rounds), semifinals and finals will
be held. Senior Lincoln-Douglas entrants will debate six rounds plus
semifinals and finals. Senior Lincoln Douglas entrants are asked not to
enter other events due to schedule conflicts. Elimination rounds will be
judges by a panel of three judges. Some novice members of the LCHS
speech and debate team may be competing in interpretive events, but will
not be advancing to final rounds.

Trophies will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners
in each multiple round event. Ribbons will be given to finalists in all
events. As in the past, sweepstakes awards will be given to the top
three schools and the top school with fewer that 12 entries. This year a
separate trophy will be awarded to the middle school with highest number
of sweepstakes points.

AS in the past, there will be a ballot room for the coaches. As the
tabs for each round are completed, a copy will be posted for coaches
only. This will allow coaches to check ballots vs. tabs as the
tournament progresses. Challenges may be brought to the tab room.
Coaches: These results are confidential and should not be shared with
your students. Ballots will be released after the awards assembly to
those schools whose fees are paid.

Food will be available for students to purchase, as there are no fast
food restaurants within a reasonable distance of La Cueva. The snack bar
menu will be similar to previous years. There will be complimentary food
for coaches and judges. La Cueva is a NON-SMOKING campus inside and out.
Please share this with your students and honor APS policies.

We would appreciate your help in providing judges. Please bring a
qualified judge for each 8 entries. If you are entering Policy Debate,
you must bring a qualified judge for each two team entries.

Registration fees will be $6.00 per individual event entry and per
Novice LD entry. Senior Lincoln-Douglas entries will be $10.00 per
entry. Each team even [Policy Debate and Duo interp] will cost $12.00
per team.

Registration and payment are to be received by Wednesday January 13,
1999. You may also call, fax, or e-mail entries to arrive by 9pm on
Wednesday January 13, 1999. Make checks payable to the La Cueva Speech
Team Boosters. Purchase orders will not be accepted. Because of the need
for accuracy, last minute changes in numbers are inconvenient. Please be
considerate and avoid drops after Tuesday January 19. No changes should
be made after this date, but if any emergency drops are required, they
should be called to La Cueva as soon as possible. Any no shows not
called in by 3:30PM the day before the tournament will be assessed
$10.00 per entry in addition to the original entry fee. Do not plan to
arrive at registration with drops and ads because registration will not
occur until after the tournament is underway. Drops occurring throughout
the tournament will be assessed an additional $15.00 per entry. Schools
with excessive drops are difficult to accommodate and may not be invited
back next year.

Since there will be no additional entries or switching of contestants
from one event to the other accepted after Tuesday, January 19, all
names of contestants and the events they will be entering will be
need3ed no later that Tuesday, January 19. Congress bills will be mailed
to schools indicating entries as we receive them.

REGISTRATION WIL TAKE PLACE IN ROOM C-8 BETWEEN 3:15 AND 5:30 PM.
ACCEPTING OUR INVITATION ASSUMES YOU WILL ACCEPT OUR REGISTRATION FEES
AND REQUIREMENTS.

The scheduled events will be split into 3 categories, or patterns.
Preliminary rounds of these events will run at the same time throughout
the tournament.

Pattern A: DX, FX, Expository, OO, OI, and Storytelling
Pattern B: HI, DI, Duo, Declamation, and Student Congress
Pattern C: Senior CX, Novice CX, Novice LD, Junior and Senior CIDNI
		(SLD is separate)

Competitors may enter as many events as they like with the following
exceptions. Competitors may not double enter in Foreign and Domestic
extemp in Pattern A. Competitors who enter Student Congress may not
enter any other event in Pattern B. Competitors may only enter one event
in Pattern C. The debate events are reserved for high school students
only. Competitors who doubly or triple enter, especially in one pattern,
do so at their own risk. Judges are asked to wait for contestants only
10 minutes after the round is scheduled to end.

Sincerely

Kristi Leveque
Speech Coach
