Dear Debate Coach:
On behalf of the Apple Valley Forensics Team, Parent Boosters, and The Apple
Valley American Legion Post 1776, we would like to invite you and your team
to attend the 13th annual Minneapple Debate Tournament. The tournament will
take place on November 6 and 7th, 1998.
The strong tradition of both the Forensics Team and debate tournament has
made the Minneapple one of the largest debate tournaments in the upper
mid-west. The Minneapple is committed to ensuring strong competition as
well as superior judging. We will offers three divisions in both
Lincoln-Douglas and Policy debate. This year, the Minneapple is a
Tournament of Champions qualifier at the Quarterfinal level in the
Lincoln-Douglas Division. As well, we will be using the ever-popular
Challenge format in the Varsity Policy Division.
We will also induct a new member into the Apple Corps. The Apple Corps
awards an individual for outstanding achievement and dedication as an
assistant debate coach. Send in your nominations with your registration
form.
Enclosed you will find a copy of our tournament rules, a schedule of events,
lodging information and tournament entry forms. Please send or fax your
registration to us by Friday, October 30, 1998. Additionally, if you are
traveling a distance that requires lodging and are in need of housing for
debaters, we will try to accommodate you by providing a night's stay in the
home of an AVHS debater. Please place your housing request by Friday,
October 23, and we will honor as many requests as we can.

Entry Rules
Entries must be received by October 30, 1998. We will continue to take
registrations after that date, provided the space can accommodate entries.
In order for us to provide the best tournament possible all changes should
be communicated throughout the week. However, as of 5:00 PM on Wednesday,
November 4th ,fees will be assessed. All schools must provide their own
judges for entries.
In an attempt to provide a level playing field to all teams attending the
Minneapple in the Varsity Policy division, schools which have teams entered
in this division are required to fill out the part of the registration form
labeled "Affirmatives Run." In this area, please list all of the plan texts
of all of the affirmatives your Varsity team(s) have run at 1998
tournaments. We will make a packet that will be available at registration.
You do not have to list any affirmatives you have not broken, but may plan
on breaking at the Minneapple.
Please fill in as many names as possible. We understand that you may not
know exactly which of your debaters will be attending. However, in order
for us to begin entering data into the computer, we need to know the names
of judges and debaters. Please send/fax in all forms titled "Entry form."
Time Limits
· Varsity Policy Debate will use the 8-3-5 time limits with 8 minutes of
prep time.
· JV and Novice Policy will use the 8-3-5 time limits with 5 minutes of prep
time.
· LD will use the NFL 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 time limits with 3 minutes of prep time.
Resolutions
· MDTA novice case limits and novice eligibility rules will be enforced. A
copy of the case limits is included in the packet.
· The Policy division will debate the 1998-99 national high school
resolution concerning the US Foreign Policy towards Russia.
· The Lincoln-Douglas division will debate the NFL November/December
resolution.
Pairings
The Varsity Policy division will be paired using the Challenge format.
Round one will be randomly paired within geographic constraints. Based on
the results of that round teams will be ranked in their bracket for round
two. Starting with the bottom team in each bracket, and moving upwards, a
team may challenge any team above them in their own bracket. This process
will continue until all teams are paired. For rounds three through five,
teams will be placed in one of two brackets based only on the outcome of the
previous round. Teams will be ranked within the bracket based on win-loss
record, speaker points and speaker ranks. Two teams from the same school
may not be paired together. The challenge format will continue during
elimination rounds. However, during elimination rounds, the highest seeded
team for that round challenges first, until all teams are paired.
All other division will be using traditional pairing methods. Rounds 1 & 2
will be preset. Each subsequent preliminary round will be powered High/Low
within win-loss brackets. Elimination rounds will also be paired as a
straight High/Low, and brackets will not be broken.
Judges
The availability of judges is crucial to the management of a tournament.
Please make every effort to have all judges in attendance for all scheduled
rounds. This is especially crucial for the first round of each day. Judges
are obligated to judge one round beyond what their team debated. The
tournament reserves the right to disqualify entries if their judging
obligations are not met. This includes missing just one round.
Additionally, because the judge pool is integral to the efficiency and
quality of the tournament, a "chaos control" fee of $80.00 will be charged
per missing judge. Each school must provide one qualified judge for every
two Policy Debate teams in each division or fraction thereof and one judge
for every two LD debaters in each division. Using one judge to cover
multiple divisions must be cleared with the tournament prior to October
30th. Judges cannot be shared between LD and policy because the tournament
is being held at two different buildings. The tournament also reserves the
right to move judges between levels of each event for ease of scheduling.
Locations
Policy rounds will be held at Apple Valley High School. Lincoln Douglas
will be held at Falcon Ridge Middle School. All coaches should report first
to AVHS for registration. Shuttles will be available to take debaters to
Falcon Ridge.
Registration
Registration will be in the Apple Valley High School lunchroom from 1:15 to
2:15 on Friday afternoon. In making sure the process is smooth and
expedient, we ask that you please call ahead with any changes before you
leave for Apple Valley High School. You can do this anytime by calling Pam
Cady's voice mail at (612) 683- 6969 ext. 3313. If you do not call ahead,
we will assume that you will be bringing your original registration.
Awards
Once again, our awards feature the red marble apple. Varsity L-D & Policy
will break to octofinals. All other divisions will break to quarterfinals.
All teams in elimination rounds will receive a marble red apple. A
consolation award will be given in each LD division. We will also be
recognizing the top six speakers in preliminary rounds of varsity LD &
Policy. We will award sweepstakes trophies to schools in LD, Policy, as
well as a combined sweepstakes award for schools competing in both divisions
of debate.

For those planning on staying overnight at our tournament, we secured
special rates at two nearby hotels. Please mention the Minneapple Debate
tournament when making reservations. A block of rooms will be held at these
rates ONLY UNTIL OCT. 23. Please make your reservations prior to that date.
