Dear Moderator:
The Bronx Science Forensic Boosters cordially invite you and your team to
participate in the Twenty-ninth Annual New York City Invitational Debate
Tournament. Here is an opportunity to spend a weekend in New York City
and to have your debaters meet some fine competition early in the season.
We are pleased that ó over the years ó our tournament has become a
premier early-season debate activity.
Dates: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 16-18, 1998.
Place: The Bronx High School of Science
Events: 1. Varsity Debate: 8-3-5 (Oregon Style). Each two-person team
must be prepared to debate both sides of the national resolution
concerning Russia. Seven preliminary rounds will lead to
sextodecimo-finals as justified. (No losing records will advance.) At
least four rounds will be power-paired.
2. Lincoln-Douglas Debate (NFL format). Contestants must
be prepared
to debate both sides of the September - October resolution concerning
sanctity (sic) of life and quality of life. Seven preliminary rounds will
lead to sextodecimo-finals.
Trophies: To the 15 team debaters compiling the best speaker points
during the preliminary rounds.
To the 10 Lincoln-Douglas debaters compiling the best
speaker points
during the preliminary rounds.
To the 32 varsity debate teams reaching the elimination rounds.
To the 32 Lincoln-Douglas debaters reaching the elimination
rounds.
To the 33rd debate team.
To the 33rd Lincoln-Douglas debater.
Fees: Each school (registration) $20.00
Each debate team $65.00
Each Lincoln-Douglas debater $33.00
Judging Responsibilities: Each school must provide one qualified adult
judge for one or two debate teams and for one, two, or three
Lincoln-Douglas debaters. A second qualified adult judge is needed for
those schools wishing to enter a third (and/or fourth) varsity team.
Some hired judges will be available on the following scale:
one varsity team or
one or two Lincoln-Douglas debaters $80.00
two varsity teams or
three Lincoln-Douglas debaters $160.00
These fees reflect our actual costs. It has become increasingly
difficult to be sure of competent, qualified judges, and we prefer you to
bring them with you. We cannot handle last-minute requests. The same
person CANNOT cover both L-D and team debate judging. No school may hire
more than one full policy judge and/or one full Lincoln-Douglas judge.
These fees are assessed as of October 10, and must be paid regardless of
later changes.
Housing: We are unable to continue offering home housing except where
reciprocity exists. Under no circumstances should you or your students
attempt to make private arrangements with members of the Bronx Science
Debate and Speech Team or its staff. We especially recommend the
Westchester Marriott Hotel, (914) 631-2200, located at the junction of I
87 and I 287, in Tarrytown, about 15 minutes north of Bronx Science. You
may call Jennifer Cancro in the sales office: (914) 333-1207. Alternates
are the Courtyard by Marriott across the road, or the Days Hotel º mile
away.
Registration: The registration blank must be completed and returned so
that we receive it on or before October 8. Please be sure to list your
contestants' names and judges' names on the form. E-mail registration
will be accepted if it is complete and timely at sodikowr@juno.edu.
Judge and contestant names are considered final by Saturday, October 10.
Changes after that date will incur the following nuisance charges in
addition to registration fees. Changes between 11 October and 14
October, $5 per name change. Changes after 14 October, $10 per name
change. Please note you may request larger registrations than indicated
so long as you cover your judging needs with qualified adult judges.
Directions and confirmation will be mailed out by October 8 to those who
register on time. If you have any questions, Phyllis Hirth can be
reached at (914) 739-6264. She may be reached in the evening. Please do
not call the Bronx Science school switchboard for information about the
tournament. We will deal by phone only with your school's adult coach or
moderator. Further information can be obtained by addressing
sodikowr@voyager.bxscience.edu. Our school's fax machine will answer at
(718) 733-7951. Please fax materials if you think they will arrive late
otherwise. Fees must arrive, however, before registration can be
confirmed.
We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you to Bronx Science on
October 16.
Sincerely yours,
Richard B. Sodikow
Director of Forensics
