SECOND ANNUAL
ARKANSAS RIVER VALLEY
SPEECH AND DEBATE TOURNAMENT
February 11, 2000
Dear Colleague,
We would like to invite you to the Second Annual River Valley HSLDA Speech
and Debate Tournament in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This tournament is a
qualifying Individual Event and Debate CX tournament for the HSLDA Nationals
to be held June 22-23, 2000, at Point Loma Nazarene University, in beautiful
San Diego, California .
The River Valley Tournament will be held on Thursday, May 11th through
Saturday, May 13th at Westark Community College in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
The schedule we will be using is on the following page.
We will host qualifying divisions of the following individual events:
* Impromptu: A spontaneous speaking event in which the participant is given
a topic and two minutes to prepare a five-minute speech. Topics are usually
abstract ideas or quotations.
* Dramatic or Humorous Interpretation: 10 minute memorized selections,
dramatic or humorous, in which the speaker brings an author, poet or
playwright's words to life in the "theater of the mind," recreating the
characters through use of the voice, gesture, and facial expression.
Dramatic and Humorous Interpretation will be run as separate events
* Duo Interpretation: Each of two contestants play one or more characters in
a memorized 10 minute humorous or dramatic interpretation or combination of
both.
* Original Oratory: A 10 minute presentation of the participant's original
writing intended to expose a threatening situation, strengthen devotion to a
cause, or eulogize a person.
Students may enter as many events as they wish. We reserve the right to
cancel any IE section due to lack of participation. Should this happen, you
will be notified one week prior to the tournament.
We will be following the HSLDA Debate Tournament rules for this tournament.
The resolution for the 2000 HSLDA Qualifying Debate Tournament is Resolved:
That the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and federal corporate and
personal income taxes should be repealed and replaced with an alternate
plan.
Awards will be given to the top three speakers in each Individual Event
Category, and in debate to the top 10 speakers, quarterfinalists,
semifinalists and finalists for the tournament.
Entry fees are $30 per CX team, and $8 per Individual Event, Duo
Interpretation fee is $16. Entry fees may be mailed or paid at
registration. Each team should provide their own judging. One judge is
required for every team, and every four (4) IE entries. Hired judging will
be available at an additional $35 per CX team and $25 for each four (4) IE
entries. Only drops received before the ENTRY DEADLINE (which is Friday, May
5th at 4:00 P.M. CST) will be refunded. Entries may be mailed to Lisa
Kanak, 9413 Carrington Way, Fort Smith, AR 72903, faxed to 501-478-6100, or
sent via e-mail to LCKanak@ibm.net. You may pre-register by phone (501)
478-6400, but a hard-copy entry form must be sent via mail, fax, or e-mail.
Lunch will be provided on Thursday and Friday for all participants and
judges. We will also have an Awards Banquet Friday Evening, with a special
guest speaker. Entry fees cover the cost for all meals of those
participating (two lunches and dinner Friday night) as either contestants or
judges. Additional meals are available at a cost of $5 each for lunch, and
$10 for the banquet.
You may enter as many teams as you wish, but space at this time is limited
to 30 CX teams and 60 entries per individual event. Additional space may be
available, but if you want to be assured a spot, please pre-register early
(this is not a confirmation of numbers attending, nor does it require any
form of deposit, it will merely let me know you are considering the
tournament). Priority will be given on a first come, first serve basis.
Due to the early start of our tournament on Thursday, it may be beneficial
for your team to arrive in Fort Smith on Wednesday evening. Our tournament
hotel for this year is The Points Inn, 5711 Rogers Avenue (I-540, Exit 8A),
1-800-356-7046. The rate is $54.95 for up to four occupants. Please tell
them you are calling to make a reservation for the HSLDA Speech & Debate
Tournament, and ask to speak with Heather. Rooms will be held at the
special rate only until April 27, 2000. Please make your reservation early.
The hotel provides a complimentary full breakfast buffet and is located just
minutes from Westark Community College, and the interstate. There are some
families who are willing to host travelers, space, again is limited and I
will need time to make the arrangements. Please let me know ASAP if you are
in need of a host family for the weekend.
We are looking forward to making this tournament a special event everyone
will want to remember. If you have any questions, please call Lisa Kanak at
(501) 478-6400. We are looking forward to seeing you in Fort Smith.
Sincerely,
Lisa C. Kanak
