2000
Newark Debate Invitational
December 20, 1999
Dear Coach,
We are eager to extend this invitation to you and your team to participate in
the 2000 Newark Debate Invitational. The tournament will be held on Friday
and Saturday, January 28 and 29. We will remain at our new site, East Side
High School and hope that you will be able to enjoy the area's fine
Portuguese cuisine during a break in your competition schedule.
TOURNAMENT DIVISIONS AND RESOLUTIONS
We will offer competition in varsity two-person policy debate and varsity
Lincoln Douglas debate. The topic for the policy division is, of course,
the 1999-2000 national high school resolution and the Lincoln Douglas
division will utilize the January/February NFL resolution (please consult
your Rostrum). The MidHudson Debate League will also host novice and junior
varsity divisions for policy and Lincoln Douglas on Saturday only.
PRELIMS, ELIMS, AWARDS, SCHEDULE
Tournament awards will begin with octafinals in both divisions and we will
present speaker awards to the top ten speakers in the policy division. We are
accustomed to beginning the elimination rounds at 1pm on Saturday after five
prelims (three on Friday and two Saturday morning). Our awards assembly is
scheduled for 6pm on Saturday.
The Newark Public School's central administration is eager once again to
personally welcome you and your team to our city and we plan to honor our
superintendent for her efforts to insure uninterrupted programmatic and
institutional support to Newark's debate programs. Accordingly we will
schedule an opening assembly in East Side's auditorium.
REGISTRATION AND FEES
There is no limit on entries per school in either division and judge
requirements are the usual one judge per two policy teams or four Lincoln
Douglas debaters. Entry fees are $10 per school, $25 per policy team and $15
per Lincoln Douglas debater. Judges may be hired at $100 for two teams or
three/four LDers and $50 for one team or one/two LDers.
DEADLINES AND PHONE NUMBERS
The deadline for mailed registration is January 24 (January 21 if you are
hiring judges). If you need to talk to us by telephone please call Brent at
(973) 761-0772 , Havier at (973) or Jonathan at (201) 465-3061 or
jaalston@aol.com. Please call in the evening. Neither Brent nor Havier are
teaching at Science High and while Jonathan is, we expect that calls to the
school will be lost in the shuffle.
FINAL REGISTRATION
Final registration will take place from 1:00pm - 2:30pm in the auditorium of
East Side High School. Debaters not registered by 2:30pm will forfeit round
one. Any team, LD or hired judge drops made after 5pm on Thursday, January
27 are acceptable but there will be no changes in fees.
HOUSING AND SHUTTLE
We apologize that we are not prepared to offer housing as a tournament
service. The continuing upheaval in the area hotel industry has caused the
closing of the hotel we used for the past two years. We are currently
negotiating for the best possible rates at several sites and will finalize
arrangements by the end of this week. At that time we will mail you hotel
information. Thank you for your patience in this matter but we feel an
obligation to get you the best possible rates by playing the hotels against
each other.
Very truly yours,
Brent Farrand Jonathan Alston
Havier Nazario
