The Heart of Texas Invitational Debate and Speech Tournament
October 22-24th, 1999
St. Mark's School of Texas
Dallas, Texas
Friends,
Please accept this preliminary invitation to the 1999 Heart of Texas
Invitational Debate and Speech Tournament. Paper invitations will be mailed
at the end of August. If you would like an invitation and have not received
one in the past, please contact me at this e-mail address and include the
name of the coach, the school, the address etc. Please be aware that St.
Mark's is not allowed to invite independent entries, and all correspondence
must be with the coach/sponsor through a school address. Last year, 128
schools from 31 states attended.
If you already know that your October plans will include Dallas, please feel
free to enter the tournament by e-mail. A few details that should be useful:
1. The Crowne Plaza Hotel of North Dallas 972-980-8877 (host hotel)
2. The St. Mark's School of Texas (Baker's Office) 214-346-8141
(smdebate@aol.com)
3. Transportation Dates:
Arrive on Thursday evening, October 21st (registration is Thursday evening at
the hotel). Depart late on Sunday evening, October 24th. The final round is
scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
4. Debate Tournament: There will be three divisions of debate: Team Policy
Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate and the Sophomore Hoe-Down Round Robin. Both
championship debate divisions will feature six preliminary rounds with
elimination rounds beginning with the round of 32. The policy debate field
will be comprised of 134 teams. There will be 130 Lincoln-Douglas debaters.
In Policy Debate, each school may enter one team. Second teams will be
accepted based on competitive applications. If you are interested in gaining
admission for a second team, please contact me at this address.
Lincoln-Douglas entries will be accepted first come-first served until 130
entries have been received. For the second year, we will also offer a unique
round robin event for sophomores. The Hoe-Down will feature fourteen
selected sophomore teams. The first priority of these students will be to
write the casebook for the Heart of Texas Policy Debate division. Hoe-Down
teams will then debate round robin Saturday and Sunday. At this point
(August 1), eight of the 14 available sophomore round robin spots have been
offered. Please contact me if you are interested. This program is intended
to offer students a chance to participate in the tournament that probably
would not otherwise be involved in the tournament as a first or second team
from a school.
5. Speech Tournament: We will offer six speech and drama events. The Speech
Tournament will feature four preliminary rounds of competition and
elimination rounds starting at quarterfinals. The Speech and Drama
preliminaries will be held at the Hockaday School-our sister school located
only a few miles from St. Mark's.
6. Judging: I am in the process of hiring the finest judge pool in high
school debate.
7. Special Programs: An outstanding high school senior will host and address
the annual Senior Speaker's Breakfast on Sunday morning. This year's Senior
Speaker has accepted his/her invitation, but wishes to remain anonymous at
this time. The Acolytes will honor an assistant coach at the opening
assembly and then again at a dinner on Friday evening. The T.O.C. Advisory
Committee, hosted by Dr. J.W. Patterson, will meet on Friday afternoon. The
NDCA Executive Board will meet. Sherry Hall of Harvard will host a meeting
of the Forum on Womyn in Debate on Saturday afternoon. 15-20 college debate
programs will send representatives to the annual College Debate Preview
Program. Of course, the Hoe-Down participants will have more fun than
everyone else with dinners, parties, and our annual trip to Dave and
Buster's.
8. Responding to the Invitation: Last year the tournament was about ¾ full
at the time that the invitations were mailed. The tournament will fill
quickly, and every year a significant number of entries must be denied due to
lack of space. Moving the Speech/Drama tournament to Hockaday should ease a
lot of the entry pressure for that event, but we still face significant space
limits at St. Mark's. Please contact me as soon as your plans are firm. The
invitation will also be available soon on our web page: www.smdebate.com
Thank you for considering this event. Y'all come.
