#debate
#debate
All right, so you found your way here. You probably already know something
about irc, but in case you don't,
I'll explain briefly. It stands for internet relay chat, which is a client
server protocol which allows people to chat with each other. There are
other little wannabe networks, but the major network of servers is the
Eris Free Net. #debate is on EFNet. If you have a unix account, you can
probably just type irc at your prompt to get on irc. Assuming you are a
debater, you probably then want to type /join #debate.
The channel #debate was first formed about two years ago. It quickly grew
to a large number of regulars, and there was good discourse about debate
issues. Most of these regulars from the first incarnation of the channel
no longer come on #debate. When the channel's first reliable bot died,
because Neil stopped maintaining it, the channel crumbled, and I usually
created it when I joined. Very rarely did anyone else come on. Once is
awhile, one of the original regulars comes on, and it's a big treat. But
that is rare.
About seven months ago, I revived the channel. With some listserv publicity,
and my own bots for much needed stability, the channel began to grow again.
There is now a strong cast of regulars, and a large number of semi-regulars
and irregulars.
The Regulars
Click on a nick to send email, on a name to go to a web page.
- cage. Brendan Deshaney. A Pitt
debater (sort of) and some time coach of North Catholic high school. He
has extreme conservative, Catholic views, so watch out!
- JohnW. John
Willemin. A debater for Jenkintown high school in Philly. He's embraced
the plan/plan so I can't really say anything bad about him. Oh, we know
he's cool because he was talking about taking a Penn freshman to the prom...
He also has another #debate
page.
- Kevin311. Kevin
Thelen. Debater from Bakersfield, CA. He must be cool because he knows
Bob Lechtreck. The 311 thing is a big minus, though...
- mrrogers. George Sidiropolis.
A debater for Wheeling Park high school in Wheeling, WV. He doesn't quite
fit the WV stereotype, though, and spends much of his time ripping on WV
debate.
- Nine11. IngHaw Cheng. When not
struggling with some kind of warez installation, he has some decent stuff
to say about debate issues. Has been on a lot recently, so I almost put
him in the regulars category, but these are all subjective determinations
anyway. He has a #debate page
too, but this link'll only work when his box is up.
- shane1. Shane
Lipson. He's the coach of Jenkintown, and originally from El Paso,
Texas. Lately, he and cage have provided the channel with daily commentary
on the MTV show Loveline.
- Shlaka. Matt
Schiros. He debates for Saint Edward High School, a fine institution
in Cleveland where I will be assistant coaching this year. He thinks he's
a computer mack, but whatever. Decent guy, although mildly obsessed with
Hollie.
- Sparkles. Hollie
Hayes. The only current female regular on the channel. She debates
for Sam Clemens high school in San Antonio. Here's a cute
picture of her.
- xem. Phil
Kerpen. You shoulda been able to figure out whatever ya wanted to know
about me somewhere around here.
The Semiregulars
- LDPurist. Caitlin
Keidel. The most regular of the LDers who come on the channel. She
debates for Crooklyn Tech in Crooklyn, NY-- my hometown.
- Quan. Cliff Sands. What can I
say?? It's Quan. This guy does nothing except ask me to explain humanism.
He's ok though. There was for some time great confusion because his partner
used the nick Quan2, but it's all settled down now.
- Spae. Sandy
Pae. LDer from Stuyveslut high school in New York City. Pity her, for
she goes to Stuy.
- Tia. Tonia Brown. A college
debater for Wayne State university, and pretty good too by all accounts.
Although I hear she was hurting on my industrial pollution T arg... :)
- wilson_. Bob Wilson. He's
a debater from South Dakota. Seems to be a generally good guy.
