It should first be noted that the Southern hospitality as provided by Mr.
Tate and MBA was amazing. The experience, competition, and fellowship
were unbeatable, and all the competitors had an unbelievable time.
Additional thanks to Jason Fernandez for running all the mechanics and
making our time so enjoyable.
The results:
5th place- Tommy Clancy, Westwood High School, Texas (11 ballots)
4th place- Andy O'Connell, Auburn High School, Washington (15 ballots)
3rd place- Tom Pryor, Hopkins High School, Minnesota (15 ballots)
2nd place- Niels Melius, Ft. Lauderdale High School, Florida (15 ballots)
1st place- David Vivero, Christopher Columbus High School, Florida (16
ballots)
Other paticipants invited (in alphabetical order):
Stephen Babb, Texas Military Institute, Texas
Pete Myers, Needham High School, Massachusetts
Greg Miller, Vestavia Hills High School, Alabama
Kelsey Olsen, Apple Valley High School, Minnesota
Mike Rosenburg, Miami-Palmetto High School, Florida
Jon Wedrogowski, Henrick Hudson High School, New York
"Bradford" Reed Winegar, Westlake High School, Texas
It was extremely close competition, with 2 of the non-ranking
participants also receiving 11 ballots and 2 receiving 10. Congrats to
all, especially Andy, Tom, Niels, and David for their notable success.
The two debaters with the most ballots were selected to participate in a
special exhibition round, with the other 10 competitors judging along
with special guest judge Dr. Allan Louden, director of Forensics at Wake
Forest University.
The result of the round was as follows:
Niels Melius (neg) won over David Vivero (aff) on a 6-5 decision.
[Louden, Olsen, Rosenburg, Myers, and Pryor dissenting;
Babb, Clancy, Winegar, Wedrogowski, Miller, and O'Connell concurring]
Special congratulations to David and Niels on an outstanding performance
at an incredibily difficult round robin. Their success was very
impressive, and their round was a fine one.
