Adam, if you're speaking specifically about what happened today, there
was a
compelling reason for you and Lakshmi to debate: there was a stipulation
in a
scholarship program (whether that be GBN's or otherwise I am not sure)
that
required students to debate rather than advance on a coach's decision.
Anyway, what would you personally have based advancement on? Seniority?
Ballot count?
Anyway, to clarify what actually happened at NFL Districts in Northern
Illinois. Going into round 6, the following debaters were left:
Elk Grove KF (Kevin Farrell) 5-0
GBN AG (Adam Groner) 4-1
GBN LS (Lakshmi Sridharen) 4-1
Barrington EP (Eli Pertsy(?)) 4-1
Round 6
GBN AG def. Elk Grove KF
GBN LS def. Barrington EP
So obviously, in round 7, Adam, Lakshmi, and Kevin were left. In order to
determine who would receive the bye in round 7 (and thus bye into
nationals)
one of the three debaters was randomly selected, and that debater was
Kevin
Farrell from Elk Grove.
So in round 7, both GBN debaters hit, and GBN LS def. GBN AG on 3-0 with
the
panel of Eric Gehrie, Karen Sandler, and Andrew Vaden.
So Kevin is the first qualifier, Lakshmi is 2nd, Adam is 1st alternate,
and
Eli is 2nd alternate. Apparently all of these procedures were explicitly
written out in an NFL rulebook. (i.e. the random bye drawing)
Although everyone at Elk Grove is excited that Kevin received his third
NFL
Nationals bid, we wish that the outcome of the tournament had been a bit
"cleaner", in a word.
Congratulations to the qualifiers and alternates (Lakshmi also qualified
for
NFL Nats. in Extemp), and the judging pool was incredible.
If anyone has input into this specific situation, I think it would be
greatly
appreciated.
