Subject: Saints' Round Robin
Would you mind posting this on hsdebate.com? Thanks.
Last weekend, April 5th/6th, the first L/D Round Robin Tournament in the
state of Mississippi was held at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Ridgeland.
Twelve debaters from seven schools around the state were chosen based on
their performance during the school year. Four debaters received automatic
bids from their finishes at the 2002 NFL District and 2001 State
Tournaments.
Contestants were seeded based on their performance during the year and split
into two pods of six with the top two from each circle advancing. Results
from prelims were:
Circle A:
1st - Russ Cannon, R. H. Watkins HS (4-1)
2nd - Land Jones, St. Andrew's Episcopal School (4-1)
Since both contestants had the same W-L record in prelims, the tie for
seeding in elims was broken by a head-to-head runoff round. These two
cleared based solely on their prelim W-L records.
Circle B:
1st - Alan Henderson, R. H. Watkins HS (3-2)
2nd - Brandon Russell, Brookhaven HS (3-2)
Again, the tie for seeding in elims was broken by a head-to-head runoff
round. These two needed 242 total speaks to clear from their pod.
Semis
------------
Land Jones (Aff) def. Alan Henderson, 3-0
Russ Cannon (Aff) def. Brandon Russell, 2-1
Finals
-------------
Russ Cannon (Aff) def. Land Jones on a 5-0 decision.
I believe that the final round was also the first actual round of
competition in Mississippi recorded on videotape.
Other Contestants (in alphabetical order):
Vince Falconi, St. Joseph Catholic HS
Ford Flippin, Jackson Academy
Bobby Lawson, R. H. Watkins HS
Jonathan Lowery, Jackson Academy
Neil Maneck, St. Andrew^Òs Episcopal School
Lindsey Oswalt, Clinton HS
Mary-Catherine Starrett, St. Joseph Catholic
Andrew Thomas, Jackson Prep School
Finally, I'd like to congratulate and thank all the students, coaches and
parents who helped make this milestone event possible, and we will see
everyone next year around the same time.
