Subject: Iowa Caucus LD Results

This past weekend we attended the Iowa Caucus tournament hosted by coach
Warren Sprouse of Cedar Rapids-Washington High School. 56 LD'ers from
several states competed in 6 rounds of prelims, breaking to octas, with
quarterfinalists earning TOC bids.

Before I give the results, I want to give a little plug for this
tournament. Warren Sprouse does a great job of providing hospitality,
great trophies, and superior judging. This year LD was at a separate
junior high site, and we were able to run single-flighted rounds for the
whole tournament because Warren was willing to hire some extras. This
allows for a much more humane tournament for judges, much better criticism
and feedback from judges to debaters, and just a more pleasant atmosphere
overall. And the judging pool was incredible! This tournament provided
superior competition, judging, and hospitality, while keeping entry fees
very reasonable.

Negating, Steve Davis of Des Moines Roosevelt (Iowa) defeated Angie
Robertson of Fremont High School (Nebraska) on a 3-0.

Moller of Davenport North (Iowa) on a 3-0.

Des Moines Roosevelt closed out. Congratulations to coach Dave Huston of
Des Moines Roosevelt and all the coaches of the students who earned TOC
bids: Jenny Cook at Hopkins, Eric Sack at Lincoln Southeast, Ted Belch at
Glennbrook North, and Andrew Vaden at West Des Moines Valley.

The tournament also gives a debate service award (the founder's trophy) for
outstanding contributions to the debate community. This year the award
went to Dave Richardson, who retired last year after many years of success
coaching policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate in Nebraska, at Omaha Bryan and
Omaha Westside.

I'd like to thank Warren Sprouse and Kathy Ulrich (who coordinated
everything we needed at the junior high site), as well as all the students
and parents at Cedar Rapids Washington for putting on a fantastic
tournament.
