Subject: Nebraska Invitational Tournament results
Creighton University in Omaha hosted the second annual Nebraska Invitational
Tournament for Lincoln-Douglas debate yesterday, March 25. During the
competitive season, Scott Tomsu, who administrates the tournament, compiles
a running total of points garnered by registered varsity LD'ers (5 points
for a win, 2 for a loss, extra points for outrounds and tournament
championships) and then, at the end of the season, sends invites to the top
16. The tournament is run like the College World Series with debaters
seeded and placed in four double-elimination brackets. Once the top 4 reach
semis it becomes a single-elimination tournament with two rounds to a
champion.
Congratulations to Nick Turner and Tricia Bolin of Millard West High School,
who closed out the tournament this year, with Nick taking the first place
trophy since he was the higher seed. In semi's Turner defeated Ryan Grauer
from Raltson on a 3-0 decision, and Bolin defeated Angie Robertson from
Fremont on a 2-1 decision. The 4 bracket runner-ups who also received
awards were Sam Korab of Lincoln East, Ted Ashley of Lincoln East, Jennifer
Larson of Millard West, and Michaela Dunn of Omaha Mercy. Angie Robertson
of Fremont also received the award for compiling the most points during the
season and being the #1 seed entering the tournament.
Congrats to coaches John Gibson of Millard West, Dr. Charles Tichy of
Ralston, Matt Molsen of Lincoln East, and Sr. Rosemary Floersch of Omaha
Mercy. Thanks especially to Scott Tomsu for all the work he does on the
tournament to make it run smoothly, and to Marty Birkholt of Creighton
University, CU's forensic coach and a most gracious host.
Fred Robertson
