Subject: Stanford Round Robin
The Stanford Round Robin was held this past Monday-Tuesday.
The results were incredibly close where the top 7 competitors out of the 11
were separated by only 2 ballots. When all was said and done, the top five
competitors were recognized.
Participant awards went to the following 6 competitors:
Barbara Allen, Newark Science HS, NJ
Rebecca Freeland, College Preperatory School, CA
Marissa Henriques, Eastside HS, NJ
Adam Priess, Monte Vista-Danville HS, CA
James Scott, Katy HS, TX
Justin Snapp, Lakeside HS, WA
The participants finishing 2nd-4th were all tied with 13 out of a possible
20 ballots. Given the subjectivity of speaker points, we thought it would
only be fair to break the tie in the most cutthroat way, head to head
competition. Using the 6 ballots from the debates against the other 3 (2
judges per round), we were able to determine the debaters who finished 2nd
and 5th places, 4-2 and 2-4 ballot counts. We broke the tie for 3rd and 4th
using total speaker points, which going along with the theme of a close
round robin, were only separated by 1 point out of 600. Without further
adieu, the top five:
5th place: Andrew Rothschild, Cypress Independent, TX
4th place: Seamus Donovan, Edmond Independent, OK
3rd place: Jeremy Hoffman, SA Lee HS, TX
2nd place: Jon Wedrogowski, Hendrick Hudson HS, NY
1st place: Aaron Tanaka, El Cerrito HS, CA
Congratulations to all of the competitors for a phenomenal Round Robin.
Tremedous special thanks to Jonathan Alston of Newark Science HS for running
and coordinating the RR, Matt Fraser for all of his help over the long
weekend, the Stanford Debate Society for its support, and everyone else who
helped out.
