Subject: WDCA State Tournament of Champions Results

Greetings...

The Wisconsin Debate Coaches' Association held its annual State
Tournament of Champions over the weekend of December 10-11, 1999 at
Appleton West High School. The tournament is the equivalent of
Wisconsin's "state" tournament, and is entered by teams who qualify
during the course of the season at WDCA sponsored events. Here are the
complete results...

*Prelim Seedings*

1. Marquette HT [Bret Harper and Kevin Thom] 5-1, 350.00
2. Marquette HN [Jack Hogan and Andy Nolan] 5-1, 340.00
3. West Bend East BD [Bill Batterman and Steve Depies] 5-1, 339.00
4. Marquette BN [Manav Bhatnagar and Lenny Hanson] 5-1, 338.00
5. Brook Central SS [Bill Schwartz and Ankur Shah] 4-2, 340.00
6. Hortonville BC [Katie Boots and Britnee Cole] 4-2, 318.00
7. Brook Central KM [Ted Koehler and Nick Moore] 3-3, 335.99
8. Waukesha South FK [John Fonstad and Bryan Kaminski] 3-3, 330.00

According to WDCA State Tournament Guidelines, all 4-2 teams are allowed
to debate in outrounds. Therefore, the tournament broke to partial
quarterfinals with the top two seeds advancing without debating.

HN [Jack Hogan and Andy Nolan] on a 3-2 decision

Marquette affirmed with a case to redefine "free and appropriate public
education" for homeless students under the McKinney Act, claiming to
solve for the cycle of poverty. Broofield Central negated with a
topicality violation, a Deschooling Kritik, a Gabel Kritik, a
Pleasantville "Inherency Argument", a Growth Bad Argument, a Clinton Bad
Disadvantage, a States Counterplan, and several Solvency Arguments.
Ankur eventually settled on a Case Takeout, the Growth Bad Argument, and
Clinton. Congratulations to both teams but especially to Ankur Shah for
winning the WDCA state tournament two years in a row. Ankur and Bill
defeated Marquette A in Round 6, Marquette B in Quarterfinals, Marquette
A in Semifinals, and Marquette C in Finals. A big thank you also goes
out to Mr. Tom Noonan, Mr. Ken Sadjak, and Mr. Mike Traas for running a
very efficient tab room, Mr. Steve Gargo for coordinating the tournament
site, and to all the judges who stayed until very late on Saturday
night. Also congratulations to Marquette for breaking three teams into
partial quarters and for winning six out of the top ten speaker awards.
Quite an impressive performance...

Peace,
