Subject: TOC POLICY UPDATE IX
JUDGE PREFERENCE LISTS COMING ON TUESDAY INSTEAD OF FRIDAY.
I have decided to delay until Tuesday Morning the posting of the list of judges for coaches to make their preferences and strikes. Given my experience with past TOC's, we will get a number of team and judge changes between now and Tuesday. We will ask you to mark your preferences and strikes and return them by Wednesday. This way, we will be able to use them from round 1 on.
JUDGE PREFERENCES AND JUDGING PHILOSOPHYS
I am fully aware that in an ideal world you would be able to read all the judge philosophies before making your preferences. But we are in no position to offer that service this year. Waiting till you get to Lexington to makr your preferences would not allow us to use them for Rounds 1 and 2 because registration lasts until Midnight on Friday. In addition, because of the ComAir strike, some people may arrive even later. Neither do we have the software, the time, or the manpower to post all of the judge philosophy statements on the computer. This is something I will discuss with the advisory committee and with a substantial increase in fees, we might be able to offer this service next year if the Committee thinks this desirable. I would remind you that just offering preferences is a step forward; most tournaments do not do this.
PLEASE NOTE ABOUT THE ABOVE
We may be able to offer each school a few changes in preference ratings after you've seen the philosophy booklet. But those changes would probably go into effect after round 2.
CHANGES IN THIS E-MAIL
The changes in this email largely reflect misspelled names (which incidently is both a result of the difficulty in reading the handwriting as well as some careless mistakes in our office). We ask therefore that you continuing reading this memo. There are probably some judge changes as well.
Please check the following carefully.
1. Please send me any conflicts of interest for you or any of your judges. All the
teams are listed below. It is almost impossible for me to know all
conflicts. If someone is judging other than yourself, I must depend on
YOU to send me their conflicts.
In my opinion, no one should judge someone with whom they have had a
recent school identification, any compromising personal relationships.
2. Remember to send your judge philosophy statements to Aaron Timmons.
PLEASE, PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATION LISTED BELOW. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT IN THE PROCESSING OF YOUR APPLICATION.
PLEASE CHECK THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY:
1. The Spelling of All names - send us corrections
2. If it says "Judge Pending" that could mean several things. First, we may not
know whether the judge is a first year out or anything about
the qualifications of the judge. Please e-mail me the correct
information.
3. If you find that a School other than your own that has listed a first year out
or a parent not employed by the school, please notify me.
ALSO PLEASE NOTE: If you did not receive an acceptance letter, it means that one or more of the following requirements have not been met.
1. We must have verification that the adult is 21 years or older.
2. We must have your judging situation completed. (This means that no
first years can judge nor can parents not employed by the school.
No acceptances will be mailed to schools where "Approval Pending"
appears for your judge.)
3. Either the Registrar or the Principal must have signed a verification that
the debater is eligible to receive their diploma from the school
they are representing at the tournament.
4. All fees must be paid.
PLEASE NOTE AGAIN: The ADULT listed is the one accompaning the team and the one responsible for the team. That person must be 21 years of age or older.
PLEASE REMEMBER: The Judge as listed by the school must either be the director of debate or an employee of the school; otherwise, we will ask for the qualifications of the judge before approving them unless we already know the person's qualifications. Please remember that first year out of high school debaters cannot be used as the school judge.
