WESTMINSTER TWO PERSON QUALIFIER MOVES FROM WESTMINSTER TO MARS HILL FOR
ONE YEAR

For one year, Westminster has cancelled its invitational
tournament for 1998. Dr. Kenny Barfield, of Mars Hill, Alabama, has
graciously agreed to host the two person policy portion of the tournament
for one year only. Earlier, he posted a copy of the invitation, which I
am attaching, in case you missed it.

I agreed to go along with the change in response to several people
who were planning on using the Westminster tournament as their final hope
of qualifying for the TOC this year. Having said this, I must say that I
am queesy about these types of changes during mid- season. As you know,
earlier in the year I approved the move of Loyola to USC and Princeton, OH
to Lexington. These are not the kind of changes I like to make without
full discussion with the advisory committee and without inpo from all of
our TOC members. Therefore, request for such changes in the future based
on this year's changes will not necessarily be considered an argument for
approval. I will submit the entire matter to the TOC advisory commitee
for discussion in April and welcome the response of the entire TOC
community concerning the appropriatness or inappropriateness of such
actions.

Since Dr. Barfield's tournament will run one week later than
Westminster's, it will be absolutely necessary for those using this
tournament as your last qualifier, to submit your entry by overnight mail,
no later than Monday following the tournament.

TOC HOTEL RATE CORRECTION

Our TOC invitation states that our hotel rate will be $48 dollars
for 1-4 people. THIS IS INCORRECT. We should have stated that it will be
$48 dollars for a single, but $54 dollars for two or more.

TOC DEADLINES

I want to remind our TOC constituents that both fully qualified enteries,
as well as at large applications, must be in Lexington, accompanied by
entry fee, no later than March 13,1998 at 5 p.m., eastern standard time.
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT THIS DEADLINE BE OBSERVED.

(1) Westminster is unable to host (this year only) due to
			problems w/ scheduling at Westminster.
	(2) Mars Hill (Florence, AL) will host the TOC qualifier at
the semifinalist level on March 6-7. Mars Hill was one
of the original qualifiers for TOC when they began
			years ago.
	(3) Rounds will start around 3 p.m. on Friday. I will make
every effort to obtain highly qualified college judges
(coaches as well as college debaters) to supplement our
			judging pool.
	(4) There will only be one division of debate: varsity policy.
We will be unable to host LD due to lack of room
			availability.

	(5) We will include traditional southern hospitality, similar
to that offered at the Southern Bell at MBA.
	(6) I shall try to post a complete invitation to this list by
early next week and will take copies to the Barkley
			Forum at Emory.
	(7) Re: flight arrangements. I suggest those flying in from any
significant distance look at flying into Nashville or
Birmingham and then driving to Florence (about 2 hrs) or
you might get lucky and get good rates into Huntsville
(1 hr). I would not recommend flying in to our local
			airport via commuter.
	(8) Motels are very reasonable, usually around 40-45 per night.
Jameson Inn is closest to campus (5 mins or less) and
near numerous eating establishments. Other area motels
(complete info coming in the invitation) include Holiday
Inn, Ramada Inn, Howard Johnsons, Best Western Executive
Inn. Please e-mail me if you think you might be interested in
attending this last TOC qualifier for the season.

Thanks.
