Subject: CHANGE IN TOC 2000 DATES
THE ROAD TO THE FIRST TOC OF THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY
DATES: SATURDAY, SUNDAY, MONDAY
MAY 6,7,8, 2000
TOURNAMENT HOTEL: RAMADA INN (FORMERLY THE HARLEY)
INTERESTED PARTIES, PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY:
Previously we had announced an April date for the 2000 TOC. The date has now been changed to May 6,7,8, 2000.
RATIONALE FOR CHANGE
The April dates we originally set, unfortunately conflicted with several religious holidays including Easter and Passover. The upside of changing to the May dates above is as follows:
1. We obviously avoid conflicting with significant religious holidays.
2. The Ramada Inn can give us twice the number of rooms as they could have in
April, at a lower price.
3. We will have the campus virtually to ourselves since all classes will have
ended.
The downside of the change:
AP Exams begin on May 8th. After perusing the CollegeBoard Website this does not have to be as serious as I had originally contemplated.
(SEE www.collegeboard.org/ap -- for more info)
You will discover that late testing is allowed. Please note Category 2 as it relates to late testing. Category 2 specifically states that the school can elect to give a late exam for "Academic/educational or athletic contests/events (national science fairs, band scholarship competitions, etc.)" It would appear that a national debate tournament would fit under this category.
As I read it, the school can elect to do this, but will be billed an additional $40 per candidate for each exam. The school's policy will determine how much of this fee is passed on to the student.
My discussion with the AP people indicates that the earlier you begin making preperations for a late exam the better. But I am firmly convinced that in most cases debaters will not have to make a choice between TOC and AP exams.
Please note the exam schedule for week one:
May 8 French Lang English Lang
May 9 Spanish Lang Computer Sci. A/AB
May 10 English Lit German Lang/Statistics
May 11 Calculus AB/BC Art History
May 12 US History European History
Sincerely,
J.W. Patterson
